"Crinkles" on the decals !!!!!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrr

I've just started my new AMT model : the Mark Martin #6 Pfizer Taurus. I've got a very big problem with the decals that even with tons of Microsol don't get softer. The result is that I have very ugly "crinkles" on the model.

Here are the pictures of the disaster :

Far from the model it's quite OK ...


... But close to it it's horrible



What can I do ??????

humm if microsol can't fix that, well try clear coat over it. It will still show some problem, but the end result will be more acceptable.

but i'm sure you can fix some of them. Work them one by one (yes it will be long) push them down with microsol and cotton swab

Do not panic, they can be fixed. Carefully cut(slit)the wrinkles so trapped air can escape. Then take a damp,hot cloth or tissue and press firmly on wrinkled areas, do not press too long(a few seconds is sufficient). This works better and quicker than any solvent. Solvents can make their own wrinkles, this will not.

I was really grateful to come acros this thread. I know there are probaly hundreds of similar Qs and As out there but it put a thought in my head -
thanks to your excellent photos of the problem and the 2 good pieces of advice already received, if you were to make a kind of progress thread of your save it might make a very good illustrated "how to" or something that could go into tutorials/scalewiki to help people in the future.

What do you think? I don't mean to presumptuous or anything, just thought I'd raise the suggestion

Maybe you need a stronger decal solvent? Walthers Solvaset will work on decals that regard Microsol with distain. Most model train stores should carry it.

As 935k3 suggests, heat followed by gentle pressure from a moist cotton bud should help to flatten those crinkles out. Even if they have now fully dried you should see some improvement.

Yup. It's a man's decal solvent.
Nothing else worked on those Crocodile Audi decals.

Scary thought is that PollySol is even more potent than the Walthers....

Haven't found any of that stuff yet. Both it and Solvaset are too dangerous to airfreight according to US laws. Solvaset is strong enough for me at the moment, but it's always useful to have something more powerful up your sleeve.
