Advice Needed

So I'm building the Tamiya !/24 F40. This is thye first model that isn't a race car for me, and needs to have the underside of the hood painted black. My question is; how do you do this? Do I paint the part red over all and then tape off and spray the underside of the hood black? Or do I paint the underside first, then tape that off and paint the outer shell red? Also how do you tape off a vent? There are many vents on the rear bonnett of the car, and I am concerned about getting overspray on the body.

I built this a really long time ago...
I think I painted the underside of the engine cover black after I had done the red. I painted it with a brush.
You really can't see the bottom of the cover after it is installed.
I left the very inside edges red so I did'nt have to worry about getting paint on the outside surface.

Brush-painting would be pretty easy, but if you insist on airbrushing, spray the (I assume) lacquer red FIRST, then mask off carefully and paint the (I again assume) acrylic or enamel black.

As for vents, try filling the vent with a wad of wet tissue paper, shape it to fit, then let it dry. Paint away, then yank out the paper. Works great!

I wouldn't dream of bothering to airbrush it. I haven't decided if I'm going to do the inside of mine in flat black, foil heat shielding, or kevlar decal. If black, I'll brush paint it with MM acryl, using a wide sable brush. Whatever I decide, it will be after the red is painted, polished, and waxed.

My concern with using a large brush is the visible brush strokes after the paint dries. I think it would be much easier to brush a thinned out coat of matt black on the underside, but I also think that the airbrushing would look much sharper. I was really at a loss for how to tape it properly. But now that I have some direction it seems doable....
