Additives???

How good are the Lucas Additives? The Lucas Oil Additives are suppose to allow the oil to move throught-out the engine easier. And suppose to eliminate dry starts. And the Lucas Transmission Additive is suppose to improve shifting and reduce the temp. of the transmission fluid. Theres even a Lucas Additive for the fuel which is suppose to clean and lubricate the entire fuel system. Do these products actually do what they claim????

Also, I have a 3.8 V6, Thunderbird with over 154,000 miles. These cars are suppose to be notorious for their head gasket problems. I flushed my radiator and removes most of the anti-freeze and replaced it with a 50/50 mixture of water and extended life anti-freeze, (its a red color antifreeze). Will this hepl in preventing blown head gaskets, or is there an additive or another type of anti-freeze I could use??

Finally, How good is Castrol High Mileage Oil????

In general, yes. They rarely do everything they claim, but Lucas is a good name. It would be nice to know that your engine requires them before you add them. Altering oil's qualities might be a good thing for some engines and terrible for others depending on their original engineering, state of wear, ring seal, etc. There is really very little way to tell, but saying that one additive is right for every vehicle is like saying red is a good color on someone. It might be a good color for them but not someone else. Engines are as different as people.

The antifreeze is not responsible for blowing head gaskets. That is a function of mechanical pressure from combustion combined with degradation of the gasket. In some cars warped or weak heads and decks make the problem worse, but I don't think the 3.8 suffers from any of those symptoms. Drive it. If it happens, it happens. No real way to prevent it other than driving with less right foot.

Finally, How good is Castrol High Mileage Oil????

As good as Castrol's non-hi-mileage oil. Look down a few threads or do a search as this has just been discussed in the last couple days.

I'v used the lucus transmission stuff before, its helped a few rough shifting automatics I'v had, but its not magic in a bottle.

Hey guys the lucas is a well known name . Personally i too like the lucas .
My auto mech. teacher in high school swears by the stuff.He and his son race for mazda motor sports . On the oil theory , i dont know if i would switch oils on a regular bases. I use vavoline 10w30 in most of my
cars.Castrol seems to be a good oil and people keep using it .
One oil i dislike and will not use is quaker state.As far as addidtives
stay away from slick 50

Hey thanks for the replies and advice. I only use Castrol 10W40 for motor oil. But I've been thinking about maybe replacing one quart of the Castrol High Mileage with the Lucas Additive.

Hey TRACYCULBERSON , is Slick 50 really bad? My mechanic swears Slick 50 is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I've never used it though.


I'm gonna do a search on the high mileage oils curtis73 , and also on that ZMAx stuff, because I'm really interested in what people think about that too. Personally I think ZMax ruined the engine in my Firebird.

Some people swear by things such as slick50, but in the end it just buys time, never a substitute for accually fixing the problem.

well a couple of years ago i purchased a 85 IROC-Z . The car had high miles , but ran great. I put enough miles on the car for two oil changes.
On the third time i tried slick 50 and before the next oil change it was one quart low . Maybe it was just time for rings or a good going through,
but i think slick 50 caused the problem.

Well if you put a quart of slick 50 in it, and it soaked into the metal like it is supposed to, you would end up being a quart low.

You may have misunderstood what i am saying.That i used slick 50 only
that one time and from there own out it used a quart every oil change.I
personally dont think your theory is correct ethier but i dont know the answer to the question so who am i to say who is right or wrong.I sure
know one thing that is bread sucks . I started on my last oil change using vavoline 10w30 exstended life or something of mthat nature was the name of it . It was for cars over 75,000 miles

is it possible for something to soak into the metal ? im doin chemistry for my exams at school an i never heard of that, i dont mean any offense an neither am i saying in any way that you're wrong, its just i never heard of something doing that before

Well you may know what your talking about .
Your taking classes in that field and you have a better chance of being right than i do .What or where are you taking classes,and hang in there

Yeah thats what alot of those restorers and conditioners claim to do, penatrate the metal on a molecular level to reduce surface friction. Seems kinda hard to believe myself, but thats their claims not mine.
