Unhappy Tranny leaking!!!

Got a 96 accord 4 door lx. My tranny has been leaking for some time but very very little. Just got my radiator replaced and noticed that when it was taken out, some tranny fluid leaked out of one of the tubes. Now my tranny is leaking quite a bit and getting to be very noticible!! Could this be linked in any way??

I heard that if your tranny is leaking that means your tranny is going to die....is this true???

Let me know if you guys know something please!!

Re: Tranny leaking!!!

Tranny leaking is not related to the radiator replacement unless it is leaking at the radiator. Tranny fluid is sent to the radiator for cooling. That was the tube you saw leaking fluid when they changed the radiator. I hope they checked the tranny fluid after the radiator was replaced and after the engine was run for a couple of minutes. You say it is leaking-where? From the axles, hoses-where?

158000 miles and i never had this car serviced for aslong as i've owned it. I had my mechanic do it at his house which works at firestone so he obviously knows what he's doin. Its leaking about 5 inches from the center of the bottom guard...i hope this helps

So you say this has nothing to do with the life expectancy of my tranny?

Do you mean you've never had the tranny serviced. If you are the only owner and the tranny has never been serviced it's probably overdue for a service by now. Tranny leak can be caused by many things but does not mean it is going to die. If you are unlucky the case may be cracked but based on your description sounds like it is the oil cooler line(s) or connections that could be leaking. Sometimes the exact point of the leak can be very hard to find - if you cannot locate the place you can try using some UV dye with a UV lamp - that may help locate it.

Oops, i forgot that i had my tranny fluid changed bout 10000 miles ago or less so that should be fine i believe. They said the tranny was in good condition and nothing wrong with it.

BTW any of you guys with the 94-97 accords have really jerky transmitions and feels like its going to fall out of your car and other times it'll drive brand new and really smooth??? This has been really irritating. Also when the car is not warmed up and its in park, when i put it in gear it'll jerk really hard, but sometimes it wont!! I JUST DONT GET IT!!!

Re: Tranny leaking!!!

I guess you need to take off he bottom guard cover to see where the leak is. Can't tell you much unless you tell us where the leak is.

Jerky engagement is quite common on automatic transmissions - not just on Accords. Many times it is caused by sticky valves binding to the hydraulic passages. Reasons could be old tranny fuild that has developed varnish or some worn friction metarial getting stuck. If you are lucky a fluid and filter change will fix it. If not you can try adding some friction modified. Lubegard is an effective one. If all these do not work then the next thing would be to remove the valve body for cleaning. Another possibility is sticking pistons or damaged seals in the accumulator(s).

Re: Tranny leaking!!!

The mechanic probably just forgot to put the hose clamp back on the new radiator. No big deal.

the leaking is coming from the right front side of the car, bythe oil pan and headlight....kinda

Its hard to determine where its coming from because when i got under the car today, there were little drips coming from EVERYWHERE. 6,7 different spots

Re: Tranny leaking!!!

Did you take the rock guard off? Are you sure it is transmission fluid? I recommend you take the rock guard off, spray down the engine with degreaser from the top and bottom then rinse with water. Put the car up on ramps or blocks or something so you can get under it. Run the car and see where it is coming from. I don't think you have 6 or 7 leaks.

I agree, but there was 6 7 dif areas where there were drops but doesnt mean their leakin from there.

I am 100 sure its tranny fluid...its red and my level of tranny fluid has gone down.

I will take the guard off and figure it out hopefully when i can get the time

Re: Tranny leaking!!!

Could it be something as simple as a gasket leaking, and needing replacement?
