Hurrican Katrina and a CHALLENGE

I'm sure by now everybody knows about the damage caused by hurricane Katrina in the New Orleans area. Well, I think everybody needs to do something in order help out with the cleanup efforts, be it monetary donations, labor, medical help, etc. From my college campus here in Michigan a group went down to help, but I decided not to go with them, because there was more that I could do here than down there. I am a systems administrator for a call center, and we are getting calls by the hundreds, and I need to babysit the servers to make sure that they're operational. If they're not, we would be loosing many calls. That's why I can't go there and help.

Who else is doing something to help and what?

I plan on going down when I think that my presence will do more good than harm. No gas, no food, damn.

Re: Hurrican Katrina and a CHALLENGE

Should I find a list of "confirmed" charities including their phone number?

Re: Hurrican Katrina and a CHALLENGE

We have a group of 9 refugees coming to live in my neighborhood at the house across the street. Its amazing how far reaching this thing is. New Orleans is how many miles away from Denver?

I donated through my local Catholic church and hope that everyone can help in whatever way they feel comfortable with.

Re: Hurrican Katrina and a CHALLENGE

UTA is probably going to be taking in people for schooling free of charge.

Re: Hurrican Katrina and a CHALLENGE

Our college is offering free tuition for a year whose studies may have been interrupted by the hurricane and were studying at a college operated by our church.

Re: Hurrican Katrina and a CHALLENGE

my college, University of New Mexico, took in 10 students free of charge for schooling. one kid had been at Tulane for an hour before he had to leave.

as for my personal help. i took my girlfriend out to dinner at a restaruant. the owner is from new orleans. 10% of what he makes from now until the end of the year will go to NO. customers can also donate whatever else they want. on top of that. the company i work for will match any donation, it goes towards the Red Cross. i donated 100, so they donated 100. given blood, bottled water. a dollar here and there.

seeing the pictures on TV and the web makes me want to go there in person and help in the search and rescue or whatever i can do. they probably have more than enough volunteers and i would probably just hinder the response. plus the fact i'm working and going to school. i'll see what happens though. truly a sad time for all those people.

a street vendor outside of my building has family in LA, he said they are ok but their house is gone. it's sad when you can actually here someone talk about it in real life. my heart goes out to all the victims.

Re: Hurrican Katrina and a CHALLENGE

I really wish I had some money to donate. But, i owe more money then I own. Im young and still go to high school with no job, so money isn't exactly free flowing.

Ok, how about this, you can have some forgian aid just as long as you return the favour by only buying certian goods fom China and embraccing certian aspects of its culture, like changing to a socialist government.
