I am desperate for help!!!!

Hey guys, the story goes like this. I borrowed my brother's rx-7 550 cc injectors while he's at the beach, and attempted to install them. To make a long story short, I couldn't figure out how to get them to seat right in the injection holes, so i decided to put the stock one's back in. Well, awesome me dropped the one injector and broke off that cap that surrounds the needle on the injector? I didn't think i needed it... well let me rephrase that... i didn't think it would make a big difference if I installed it anyway. To make a long story short again, the car will start up and then die in 2 seconds. I can keep it running by giving it gas, but runs like absolute shit... tries to die in between gears, backfires, etc. So i guess my question is... what the hell does that cap do? and how important is it that it stays on the injector? I just want to make sure that that busted cap is my problem and that it's not something else. PLEASE HELP!

Re: I am desperate for help!!!!

Thats probably it the injector is letting too much fuel in (ie backfire) you probably need a new injector (just upgrade while your at it)

The "cap" i am talking about surrounds the needle in the injector. It's basically like a plastic coating around the end of the injector.

Re: I am desperate for help!!!!

You're probably flooding that cylinder then, just replace the injector.

Re: I am desperate for help!!!!

It's not the insulator that is actually rubber but feels like plastic because it's old and hard, right? If it is, you will have one nice sizes boost leak, thus creating the rich condition.

Geez... you guys are awesome... Thanks to ez who offered to send me the injectors, but I ordered a set of 550's from slowboy since I've been planning to upgrade anyway.... And nope, those rubber things are definitely still rubber.

Don't forget that you have to replace the rubber insulators that come off the manifold too. You're not supposed to use them again.

Hey 4G63t power.... just in case... I didn't see it in your signiature and didn't see anyone post about it... with your bigger injectors you will need an AFC...
I'm sure you already know this but just in case....

Sorry I haven't checked back at my post in a while. But yea, I know you're SUPPOSED to have an AFC, but I had a 2g mas sittin around. I have it all rewired and in there pretty decent. I'm running 18 pounds, and breaking up just a very little in second, but all the other gears are fine. Not to mention, it's hauling ass! I know an AFC would make it perfect, but I still beat an SRT4 by like 3 or 4 cars last night, so it's good enough for me. It is running rich in low rpms though, but i can deal with it. Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

Oh and 4g63power is my brother's name which I accidently posted under.

Re: I am desperate for help!!!!

You are going to be running pig rich, about 18% over the stock fuel curve. It will probably max out your FT's and you will end up with a CEL. You are already running rich by not having an AFPR with that 255 FP and not having an SAFC is going to make it even worse.

Just "suck it up" and pick up a logger/SAFC or DSMLink.

It's been about a week now, no CEL's, and I already talked to a few guys at slowboy about an FPR and all of them said you don't need it, along with all the DSM guys around here that aren't using one and have the 255 lph. I'm not saying that you're wrong, I just think it's not essential. And yes, I know i'm running rich, but a lot of people I've talked to say with a small 16, 550's and a 2g mas, you're running nearly 50/50. The slight break up in 2nd has seized, so I'm assuming the ECU adjusted the timing or something. In any case, that's the status I'm at now, and thanks for the help.

Re: I am desperate for help!!!!

I have been running for over a year now on a 255 without an FPR, running rich, yes, but still running without hitches.
