smoke, smoke, and more smoke

I've searched thouroughly and i think i've come to the conclusion that i either have a shot head gasket, bad turbo, or valve stem seals. My car blows a lot of white smoke, especially at boost/right after boosting. Took my radiator cap off, coolant looks a bit cloudy and there is a bunch of oil on the bottom of the cap. That leads me to believe head gasket. The car smokes a lot more at boost, which i think could be the turbo also. Valve stem seals are old as shit and probably need replaced. The smoke smells like burnt radiator fluid. Sometimes it smells like i'm burning oil. Damnit! I JUST put in a new tranny/clutch. Not even a week and a new problem arrises! Why me!? Looks like i'll be in the garage for quite some time, yet again. This will be my first time ripping the head off. No worrys, i know what to do I'm going to replace the timing belt, balance shaft belt (maybe even eliminate those suckers), new tensioner, new water pump, and anything else that might need replacing and clean up that side of the motor (any oil/grime on the block, etc). Soooo. Before i actually start ripping the head off, anyone want to give any input? Any useful tips, or other ideas of what could be causing my car to smoke?

Thanks.

Steve

Yeah its either turbo, head gasket, or valve stem seals. Its not to fun replacing the water pump and all the other stuff. What kind of turbo are you running on ?, your stock one ? And how many miles on the turbo ? Maybe its time for a 20G .

when you discover the problem, let me know. Because unfortunitly thats exactly what started happening 2 nights ago after 7-8 runs at the local track. I don't have any smoke coming out at idle, or under boost. It only puffs a small amount of white smoke out durring shifts, and POORS out like a smoke bomb after 3rd gear pull to 7k! I had somone run my car on the track while i watched in the passenger seat in another car. At the end of the track when he let off the gas to slow down it was increadable. It looked like my tire was on fire, it was coming out from underneath my muffler, through my wheels, and out the tail pipe.

So i feel your pain. I personaly think its my turbo. But I dont have the time to figure it out this week. So, Please, with sugar on top. Keep me informed!

Thanks
Scott

Eh...If its his turbo, then he needs another one. It's a valid excuse in my book to upgrade.

Re: smoke, smoke, and more smoke

Have you done a compression test? If it's a bad head gasket or vave stem seals it should have low compression. Sounds similar to what happened to my talon (still not sure cause i haven't taken it apart yet) it was smoking a lot after it overheated so i did a compression test and got 120-90-80-110, i cried myself to sleep that night.

Re: smoke, smoke, and more smoke

i did a compression test about a month or so ago and i got 145 (or 155, can't remember exactly) on all 4. i just took the turbo off last night. there is a good amount of shaft play and there was a bunch of oil in the inlet and on the wheel...think i found my problem

Re: smoke, smoke, and more smoke

I tried rebuilding my turbo once and it didn't work out. You might be able to find a used turbo for about that price. You should take the turbo apart and check the shaft i think mine was messed up.

Re: smoke, smoke, and more smoke

If you do your own rebuild, don't you have to send it out to have it spin balanced?

Re: smoke, smoke, and more smoke

I thought that one of the tubes that connects to the intake put oil compresser housing. I have had oil in there for a long time. I also have oil in the upper ic pipe, damn i need to change this turbo.
