Sppedometer Messed UP

Hey guys, My friend has a 1995.5 also a 1996 I suppose Tacoma 4x4 Extended cap. He has a lift of either 3 or 6 inches along with 33 inch tires.

He recently got a speeding ticket for going 71 in a 55, but his speedometer only showed 58. This is of course due to his lift and large tire size, or at least thats what i've been told.

WE took it to the dyno today to prove this, and that's exactly what we got from the readings. The speedometer is about 20% off. THe mechanic told us something about a chip that could be used to dial it back a certain percentage, b/c the speedometer itself cannot be adjusted (we asked many many people). Do you guys know anything about this chip or what we can do to dial it back to the correct speed, b/c it
s really difficult for him to follow the speedlimit with this problem.

Thanks

Another possibility is changing the 3rd members in front and back.

Re: Sppedometer Messed UP

You need to change your speedo gear to match tire size and gear ratio. The after market speedo modul will not work unless its' 98-99? or newer. I'll try and find the speedo formula to figure out speedo gear size.

Re: Sppedometer Messed UP

Thanks for the best reply

On the site, they claimed 1992 and later

The best solution is changing the 3rd members so that you get back the torque you lost by going to the bigger tires.

Re: Sppedometer Messed UP

The 3rd member is the guts of the differential which you can buy and just bolt in (more or less). You can buy them with different gear ratios to compensate for different size tires.

Changing the differential gears will get back the torque you lost from going to larger tires, as well as correcting your speedo.
