How do I fix squeaky brakes?

My brakes sounded really bad the other day so I took them in to get checked and sure enough I needed new pads and they had to turn my rotors ($220). One of the guys there said my front brakes were practically brand new (I've only had this car for about a week, I didn't know this) and also that they would probably squeak when they get hot, is there any way to stop that god awful embarassing noise?

Re: How do I fix squeaky brakes?

Happens to my bird alot too. Just got buy some brake cleaner. Whenever you start to hear that noise, take your front rims off, and spray down your rotor and caliper, and be sure to turn your rotor too so that the cleaner gets to spread around. Should fix it. It'll probably continue to make that noise even after you spray it down. But give it a while, it should clear up.

Re: How do I fix squeaky brakes?

speaking of turning your rotors, how much would it cost to turn my front rotors?

Re: How do I fix squeaky brakes?

Why would you pay $220 to turn your rotors? It would have been cheaper to just buy new ones.

Ya, thats a little expensive. I think you got ripped off.
You should go back and complain. Did the dealer do it?

Re: How do I fix squeaky brakes?

well, it wasn't JUST turning them, they checked all the brakes and replaced the rear pads, but I still think it was too high. A dealer did it, not THE dealer though. It's a big GM dealership and they will work on any GM car, but I got it somewhere else.

I have future plans (way in the future) to get bigger drilled rotors for racing, and real nice pads, and on and on...about $15 grand worth of stuff

Re: How do I fix squeaky brakes?

brake cleaner does not stop the noise. as mentioned in other posts, there is a paste that goes between the brake pad and the piston. some pad manufacturers already deliver a small amount with their pads. some don't. you can get this stuff at any good auto parts store.

yes!!!! the piston of the caliper and the back of the pad. the noise ALWAYS comes from this area.

it does NOT matter what type of pads you use metallic, semi metallic whatever the noise is not generated from between the pad and the disc, it is generated from between the back of the pad and piston of the caliper. the paste will eliminate that noise.

Re: How do I fix squeaky brakes?

unless you have metallic brakes, when they get hot they squeak. ask any mechanic and they will tell you they same. i had metallic brakes on mine that did the same thing, when i swapped them out for non-metallic brakes(which i didn't put any paste on) they squeak stopped. because there was no metallic pad touching the metal brake rotor to make it squeak. if your pads feel a little loose in the caliper, then yes you do need the paste, but that will only cause i little squeak, not like the squeak you were describing!

Re: How do I fix squeaky brakes?

look it up, or ask somebody. metallic pads will squeak like crazy. for real, i'm not just being arguetive, they really do. they squeak that you are talking about from not having that lube, is a very slight squeak that happens right as you touch the brakes, then right as the brakes let go. when you are actually on the brakes, if that is your only problem(not having that lube on them), they won't squeak. cause there is way too much pressure on them to where they can't move around in the caliper.
