Question Check Engine Code PO455

Hello Men,

I have a 1997 Taurus GL & the Check engine light is on again.
Came on last year "evap." so I replaced fuel cap -w- a new one and was good for about a year.

This time it's code PO455

Autozone said it's "evap. leak major" Any Ideas where I should start?

Thanks in Advance to you all.

Re: Check Engine Code PO455

Gross evap leak is usually a loose gas cap or a major leak in a hose somewhere. All I can suggest is to start at the evap cannister and follow all lines to see if you can spot a crack or break i the line. Also look around the evap solenoid area.

I've had the same code on my 97 Sable. My Haynes manual says P0455 is an EVAP-very small leak. This is consistant with the fact the check engine light comes on every few weeks. I purchased an inexpensive code reader on eBay and have been resetting the codes. Haynes gives code P0457 as the gross leak, due to a loose gas cap. Please post the fix when you track it down. Thanks.

Re: Check Engine Code PO455

Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0455 indicates that the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) control system detected a large leak or no purge flow

This is directly from the 1997 Ford Taurus Manual.

Re: Check Engine Code PO455

Is there any chance the car was running when gas was put in? If so, that can cause the code.

Well I couldn't find any leaks in the EVAP lines so I replaced the gas cap. This didn't solve the problem I'm still getting 0455 every few days. Are there any diagnostic tests using the test port?

Re: Check Engine Code PO455

About the only way to check it is with the shop manualand a smoke machine. The smoke machine pumps a mist into the system and will leak out where the problem is. The only other way is to look closely at all the hoses and lines to see if there is a loose connection, cracked line or cannister.
