Eighties Contest Entry: 1/24 Porsche 962C Shell Le Mans 1988

As inspired by Mark Williams' Porsche 962 Conversion pages (http://www.scaleautosport.com/models/mw962/index.html), I started to build this project. Mark's excellent ground work and information eases me a lot in planning.

As you may aware, Tamiya's 962 has a few problem:
1. the front is IMSA-style, while it should be thicker in this version.
2. it's short tail, while it should be long tail in this version.
3. all glasses are moulded to the body... so either replacement or vacuum-form is required.
4. the rim diameters are different in this version.
5. there is no engine details.

For the body work, I slightly modified Mark's idea. A Tamiya 956 (marked blue) and 962 are used to remake the body...

Some putty and sanding works are done so as to smooth the connection between different donars. A 956 is used because the windscreen and the door windows are moulded separately, and it comes with an engine. The tail was extended with some styrene sheets and epoxy putty as mentioned in Mark's page.

To have a thicker front, the 956's front was used and broken into pieces (upper is 956; lower is the 962 with the headlight glasses removed)...

Only the middle part is used. A hole is opened in the 962's front...

Then merged together...

After some putty work, primed and sanded...

Am I the first entry of the Eighties Contest?

Was thinking of doing this one myself for the contest with the Studio27 transkit, but I have plenty of others to choose from. BTW, all that work looks fantastic.

The Studio27 transkit is very hard to find now.

Great work!

Is it difficult to convert the 'Kurzheck' version to 'Langheck' ?

What do you think about this 962C transkit on this page:

Great project. I'm building a 962 at the moment, not my contest material though.

Great work so far, a very interesting project. I was considering doing something similar myself but figured it was too much work!

At the beginning, I thought the conversion was quite hard to achieve. But with the help from Mark's page, and there is even some templates for download in his old webpages (http://www.geocities.com/scalecentral/porsche962/), it encourages me a lot in trying to give it a shot.

For that 962C transkit, it looks quite good in shape. At least it saves a lot of putty and sanding work. But it seems to be a trim down version when compare to that of Studio 27. So, how much is it?

That's my luck you quit this project, otherwise I'll have no chance to be voted...

The Tic-Tac 962C. Decals are a bit daunting Luckily though I can keep the standard tail, I don't know if my skills would be up to making a low downforce tail like you are

Wow! What a lovely car! Always wonder how a small pack of candy could sponsor motorsport...

Great work on a tough conversion! Keep it up!

I wonder how many 962īs we will have in this contest.
