Thinkin about gettin a Sol

I'm sick of my rusting accord, so I was looking in the paper today and I found a 93 DelSol S for $3900. It looks like its in good condition. Is this a good price?

I have some other questions for you guys:

How is it with the T tops or convertible top in the winter? Do they let cold air in or get wind noise?
Is it easy to find aftermarket parts for them? I haven't looked yet...
Is the S model have pretty peppy engine?

Any other comments about what you like/don't like about sol's would be GREATLY appreciated.

The best place for you to discover tons of information about the del-Sol is www.teamdelsol.com Check FAQ for models, engine types, colors available, options, etc. etc. etc.

The price sounds good if the sol is in good condition. The sol has a targa top that comes off and is stored in the trunk on a rack that can open up to allow stuff to be put into the trunk underneath the top. The top can be creek at times, but if you lube the rubber gaskets on a regular basis, then you should have minimal noise. It is important to keep the rubber gaskets lubed during the winter time, since they can dry out easier due to the weather. There is a HOW TO on www.teamdelsol.com to follow. The problem with 93-94 models is that the rubber gasket tends to leak and was corrected in 95 or 96. I can't remember which year. The main gasket that goes up and around the back part and down is not cheap to replace unless you find one at a junkyard. There usually $450 bucks. It was a recall I think, but i am not completely sure on that. A little wind noise, but nothing to be alarmed about or that is too annoying.

Very easy to find parts for the sol. There a lot of companies and lot of options to upgrade parts. Since you can swap in a b16, b18, and H22, then your engine upgrades can be unlimited. The H22 requires some modification or certain brackets, but it has been done by a lot of solers.

The S model has a 1.5L non-VTEC with 105hp from 93-95. In 96-97 the S model has a 1.6L non-VTEC with 106hp.

The Si model has a 1.6L SOHC VTEC engine with 125hp from 93-95. In 96-97 the Si model has a 1.6L SOHC VTEC engine with 127hp.

The VTEC model has 1.6L DOHC VTEC engine with 160hp from 94-97.

The 94-95 VTEC models have a b16a3 engine with a OBD1 computer.
The 96-97 VTEC models have a b16a2 engine with a OBD2 computer. The same as the 99/00 Civic Si.

All sol models all years have electric windows.

S models had the option for power steering on for the manuals, but came on the auto matics. S models have rear drum brakes

1995 was the introduction to power door locks, trunk release, low fuel light.

93-93 bumpers have aux lights. 96-97 no aux lights and slight air dam mod on the bumper.

93 sols have no passenger air bags. 94-97 had driver and passenger air bags. The glove box is bigger on the 93 since there is no air bag. Smaller from 94-97 because of the passenger air bag.

There is so much more bits of facts and such, but I hope that gives you a general idea of what is available.

US Honda del Sol production numbers

1993 25,748
1994 21,075
1995 14,021
1996 8,489
1997 5,603
Total 74,936

A lot of people buy S models because they weight the least amount and then they swap in a faster engine. And if insurance rates are issues, then an S model is cheaper than Si and VTEC models.

Wow thanks for the info I'll have to check out that site.

I have another question for ya: Is the insurance for the sol any higher than your civic? Do they consider it a sports car since it has 2 seats and a targa top? I'd hate to have my insurance skyrocket since I'm still considered a risk until I turn 18 in December.

If I recall, the Si and S models are the same rates as Civics. Not entirely sure about that though.

Your best bet to get an accurate cost is to call your insurance company and get a quote. Just get the info. from your parents if your on there policy or have your pops call. Ask what it would be for an S, Si, and VTEC models. Your driving record, age, and if your on your parents policy, etc. will also play a factor in the rates. Quotes are free, so all it takes is a call. Good luck

yeah thats preety cheap. i would buy it if it was around my area. It also depends on the miles on it and how it looks inside and out and if it runs good. if all that is straight then thats a pretty good deal.
