New Z4

My wife is itching to sell our '96 328ia and buy a new Z3--until some idiot with few smarts told her to wait and buy a new Z4 "when they come out in October." Can anyone give me details about this car so I can do some research? I want to make sure she is heading down the right road in regard to this new car purchase idea.

Z4 doesn't make sense. According to the new BMW numbering system I've been hearing about, a 4er is a two-door 3er coupe. So the Z4 = Z3? (Four-door z3 would be weird) But the new Z3 is coming out this spring.

Here some pics I've found. The Z4 looks alot like the new Z3. Same car?

After searching Google, I'm convinced that the new Z3 = Z4. This would follow BMW's new number system.

Hmmm. I'd rather have the Z5. 240hp 4 cylinder, 2100lbs or so. Also plans for the M3 I6 making 360 hp.

Your Z4 there bears more than a passing resemblance to the new Z3. Is this a production car? I have a subscription to Road & Track and haven't seen anything about a Z4.

I get the impression the Z4 is just the prototype 2nd gen Z3, or vice versa

I don't know. I hear alot about the new BMW numbering system, but nothing directly from BMW (ie: a production 4er or 6er). When I was searching for the z4 on google, I notice that a lot of them were non-English sites. Who knows.

I think "Z3" is the new ragtop and "Z4" is the new coupe....

AutoWeek has an article on this.

Here's what it says, but you should go look at the good spy photos.

Quote:
When is a Z3 not a Z3? When it’s a Z4, of course.

Starting with this autumn’s Z3 replacement, BMW will adopt a revised naming system for its cars.

As a result, sedans and wagons from 2004 onward will retain the familiar odd number designations— 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series and 7 Series. Meanwhile, all upcoming coupes and cabriolets will get even number designations, the first being next year’s 6 Series, while today’s popular 3 Series becomes a 4 Series in 2006. The future could hold a keenly priced 2 Series and a follow-up to the discontinued 8 Series to fill out the range.

Where does this leave the Z3 replacement? According to high-ranking officials at BMW’s Munich headquarters in Germany, it will be rebadged Z4 when it makes its world premier at this September’s Paris motor show. All of which begs the question: With a Z4 and Z8 in the lineup, is there also going to be a Z2 and Z6? We hope so.
