2002 Audi allroad 4.2

"What is it?
2002 Audi allroad 4.2

What's special about it?
Audi claims that the application of its 4.2-liter V8 to the ruggedly capable allroad crossover SUV is a "master stroke." We'd call it a "no-brainer."

The allroad 4.2 makes 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, 50 and 37 more than the allroad 2.7T. So equipped, it will get from stationary to 60 in about 7 seconds, power flowing to all four wheels through the familiar five-speed Tiptronic automanual transmission.

New with the application of the V8 are steering wheel-mounted gear-change buttons that allow the driver to shift without taking her hands off the wheel. The transmission defaults to automatic mode after 8 seconds if the driver fails to intervene manually once more. Also new is a Sport mode for the Tiptronic tranny, which results in delayed upshifts and quicker downshifts.

Models designated 4.2 also et unique hollow-spoke 18-inch aluminum wheels, 245/45 tires and standard xenon headlights. Now if we could just get them to capitalize the 'a' in "allroad."

"At a base retail price of $39,900 the allroad quattro is equipped with a 2.7-liter biturbo V6 engine that produces 250 horsepower. Standard features include dual front and side airbags, Sideguard curtain airbags, a 6-speed manual transmission, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a height-adjustable suspension."

"Equipped with a 250-horsepower biturbo V6, quattro all-wheel drive, and a 4-level height-adjustable suspension, the allroad quattro is ready to tackle the pavement or the dirt."

"With the 4-level pneumatic suspension set to Level 4, the allroad quattro sports 8.2 inches of ground clearance for off-road driving."

Think this car isn't Audi's most selling car, though I know of several people who own one. High price (in Norway- starts at $70 000) makes you just want to buy the A6 Avant instead and save a couple of bucks.

For some reason I really like it, looks kind of tough and with the twin turbo or 4.2 under the bonnet I'm sure it flys. An interesting car for Audi but I think it didn't sell because it doesn't really fit into any catogory (same with Volvo XC70, no sales) and doesn't really move the game along either. A car generally has to do one or the other to be sucessful. For example the S-Class has lots of sales because people feel they want/need a big luxury car, and the smart car sells well because it's ideal for the city.

I dont think that's the reason. Success can be achieved by identifying niche markets and exploiting them. Audi screwed up, whether it was with marketing, or price... thats unimportant, it's a good car and it didnt sell. Audi did something wrong

'Success can be achieved by identifying niche markets and exploiting them'. You're right there, that's what happened with the Renault Senic and now we have these mini MPVs buzzing around all over the place. But some of them don't work, like the estate car-cum-off roader.

I think the estate-cum-off-roader idea has a lot of potential and along with many others i thought it was gonna be huge for Audi.. i think failure has had a lot to do with price / packaging

What do you mean by packaging? That the cars themselves were too similar to their road only counterparts? The allroad starts at £27,690 for the 2.5 TDi. Do you feal that unreasonable?

I couldnt believe your figures, so after looking at Audi's uk site, it turns out the Allroad starts at £30,070, not £27k.
I believe the price has come down in order to shift some models, it may have been more expensive before. What i meant before is that the marketing for the car wasnt done very well.
