"service engine soon" light

Hi people,

Sweet BBS software here.

Anyway, my wife has a 1999 Maxima, and her "service engine soon" light came on yesterday, and she's freaked out about it.

Needless to say, like most people these days, it's hard to drop everything and just take it in. (and of course, I'm gonna be responsible for getting it fixed).

The light is solid (not blinking), and the service manual says this is caused by a problem with the emissions system. If I can't get the car to my mechanic until Monday, is she safe to drive to work the next few days? (I should mention, her round trip commute is close to a 100 miles).

If we try to push it until Monday, could we do some serious damage to the system, or is this "problem" a gradual thing?

One mechanic told me that I could unhook the battery for a minute to clear the computer's memory. That would tell me if there really was a persistent problem or not. I don't know if that's good info or not, but I tried it, and the light still came back.

Anyway, throw me a bone or two. I need some help. Any comments or suggestion you've got would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Doubt you'll have any problems driving it till Monday. Probably just an O2 sensor.
