Check Engine light on?

My "Check Engine" light came on in my 96 Bonneville & I was wondering if I could get the computer codes myself without one of those expensive code readers. I have a reader for my 88 Bonneville but it's only good to 95. Also, where is the hook up for the code reader? Any help would be deeply appreciated.
