gsr swap - check engine light????

ok my friend has a 97 civic hatchback with a gsr swap done to it. tonight after we went back to west haven from long wharf races in new haven, i leaned into his car to look at his v-afc. i then notice his check engine light is on.

i said, "look at that little light there". he said "oh yea, thats common when you swap any motor" ... "because i dont have any of the gsr accessories i have the plugs but i dont have the accessories. i'm just going to take the bulb out." this gets me wondering, is what he's saying true?

i thought there were ways around this? he said he reset his ecu and everything... i'm lost.

i'm trying to gather lots of info because i plan on doing a b18c1 swap in my coupe.

as a side note... i watched an h22 hatch beat a ls/turbo tonight. crazy race. but then came the cops and they tried blocking us in. haha i was able to get around him.

Find out what code its throwing, then fix it. Taking out the bulb is stupid. Just because you have a swap doesnt mean you get a check engine light. Depending on what the code its throwing is, it can cause the engine not to run at its best. The ECU monitors multiple inputs to change the pulse width of the injectors.

Basically check engine light is bad and shouldnt be ignored.

there are a few thing that could be. Thants why you want to check the code. I just did an b18c1 eng. swap into my 6g civic hx and i have a check eng. light on. The code I have is a "91" "fuel tank pressure sensor". Well the HX does not come with an fuel tank pressure sensor, so I have a couple of things I can do. I can pay $130.00 for a FTP sensor or I can make an 2.5 V simultor and run it into the ECU. He might have the same problem so check on that. Good luck. stefan525

You can do the diagnostic on your ECU with the help of a paper clip. Im sure you have one arownd the house. There is a two wire plug next to your ECU that is safely placed in a rubber groment. All you have to do is bend the paper clip, place the ends in the plug, turn the car to ign. (do not start) and the "check eng." light will start to flash. It will flash long flashes pause then short flashes, then extra long pause between the codes. EX: Flashhhh Flashhhh Flash for code 21. If you have more then one code it will read all the codes one after another and then start all over with the first one. Good luck. stefan525

PS: check "www.jdmfan.com" under the "Technical" section for pics and step by step instructions. Also for the OBD II codes.

Re: gsr swap - check engine light????

ok, first, you should have started your own thread about this one... because bringing up old threads is against the rule (unless you started this thread in the first place) and second, sold CEL when the service connector is jumped means Bad ECU... did you swap out ecu's when u did the swap?
