Re: OK stupid question but my dad got me thinking

why would you put that engine in a camaro when the 3800 or the ls1/lt1 is better?

it can be done, anything with the amount of $$ going to be put into it better off with a lt1 or ls1 if its a older camaro get a cheap 350 and rebuild it. just dont put a truck motor in it.

Re: OK stupid question but my dad got me thinking

if youre gonna install a new engine, i agree, id put in a 350, but if you want the sixer, ive seen a few people bring up the idea of the 4.3L engine but have yet to see a completed version on the road. Personally i dont know why they didnt put it in to begin with.

Re: OK stupid question but my dad got me thinking

well, displacement for one, parts commonality with the sbc 350 for a second. Also he has a third gen camaro which means it dosnt already have a 3800 V6. so he can put in anthing he wants. Also, while the 3800 makes around 200hp stock, and dosnt have a whole lot of aftermarket support. The intense aftermarket backing for the sbc means you can build a 4.3L to around 300hp naturally asperated. and with a bolt on supercharger ive seen even more, i dont remember exactly but it was either 400 or 500hp, it was hotrod magazine that did the build i think, that or chevy high performance.

Re: OK stupid question but my dad got me thinking

Yeah, I pondered the idea of getting a 4.3. Found out it uses the same size pistons, valves, and a few other things as the LT1 or either LS1. Can't remember which. Basically it's a V8, with the exception of the 2 cylinders. It's a 90* block as well and can bolt right up to any regular V8 tranny. Should bolt up without too many problems. Not positive though if the motor mounts are in the right place or not, but it wouldn't suprise me if they were. That would be awesome to see someone put it in a Camaro. The only reason why I didn't go through with the idea, is because I didn't feel like getting another tranny.

my mistake, wasnt aware of that. in any case, its no where near the ammount youd have with the 4.3L (through the sbc aftermarket) and its kinda the LT1, but more the standard SBC, and not the LS1 that its related to.

Re: OK stupid question but my dad got me thinking

the beautiful thing about the vortec 4.3L sixer is that the heads are fantastic performance peices, why you ask? because they share the identical port configurations and combustion chambers as the L31 vortec heads that routinely make 400hp on mild compression mild cammed small block 350's. So you dont need to shop around for aftermarket units. Have those fully ported and fit them with 2.02/1.60 miloden undercut valves, and youll have some serious breathing potential. Fit a set of flat top pistons, im not sure what cams are available, but im sure comp cams would custom grind you one, lol, it would be hot to use an old muscle car profile with a roller lifter for faster opening and closing ramps, and then have the fuel and spark curves optimized. match it to a custom set of headers and exhaust, that would be one bad ass sixer no doubt.

Re: OK stupid question but my dad got me thinking

If you want to be original, pull one of those giant 500 cubic inch engines out of a 70's cadillac in the junkyard for like $100 and rebuild it.

That's what I'm gonna do if my Maro's heart gives out.

Re: OK stupid question but my dad got me thinking

haha, easier to do with an older camaro and the massive engine bay that isnt cluttered with hoses, electric equipment, and emissions stuff.
