intermittent starting problems

Ok I give up. Everytime my daughter drives her car any distance, when she turns it off, it won't start again. I've replaced the starter, battery and checked and cleaned the connections. Any ideas o toyo gurus?

BTW, I forgot to add. Once she lets it cool down it starts back up and she's on her way. Usually takes 1/2 hour or so.

What exactly do you mean it won't start? Does the engine crank but will not fire? Or there is no response at all from the starter?

I know this is going to sound strange, but does she have a whole bunch of stuff on her key ring? Sometimes a worn lock cylinder will allow the worn key to be displaced if there is a ton of crap on your key ring, but of course this would have nothing to do with it if the engine turns over but doesn't fire, and absolutely nothing to do with the hot/cold issue.

Hey! I have the same issues too!
All the electrical system works; lights, radio, etc. but the starter just won't crank. You get nothing... dead silence. I replaced the starter last month, never had any issues like this with the old one... Oh yeah and my lock cylinder is broken too, was broken for a good 5 years now (no problems until now). Any ideas?
A little trick I picked was to "tap" the starter a few times with a wrench or hammer (something hard). Try starting again and it works. This usually works about 80% the first time. Don't be surprised if your swinging away on it a few times before it starts.

Your starter has bad internal contacts. This is a pretty common problem with Toyota starters. There is a good DIY fix for this. Do a search for "starter contacts". If you can't find the fix here, go to Toyotanation.com and search for it on that forum. If your starter is under warranty, you may just want to take it back and exchange it for another one.
