If anyone could help me out that would be great!!
Hi girls,
I have a few questions. As I said in my last post, I am new to all this Import Tuning stuff. I want to learn everything, I have a 5 speed Red 97' Honda Civic Ex. Already have a system put in, rims, and euro's but now I have the looks I want the speed. I have already got a cool air intake but it is not all that great the lady before me put it in and it kinda um...how do I say this.....SUCKS! It also has some kinda exhaust but we cn not figure out if it is a tip or a full exhaust system. I want the headers and turbo but they are so expensive I mean that is like three grand and sorry mommy and daddy don't give me money to trick out my car. But I need to know where to get them if anyone knows where there are some good prices, and any suggestions on what to but in the engine are appreciated! My Boyfriend is getting into this with me so we are going to learn together but any advice would be most welcome! Thank you

there's no need for a header if you're installing a turbo system. the turbine is placed in the exhaust stream, using the exhaust pulses to spin the turbine, compressing the intake air. the turbo uses a turbo manifold and downpipe in lieu of a header and collector setup. most kits are $3000. you can find a used one for under $2000 in decent shape. you can also piece one together for under $1500 if you shop around for used parts and have some connections. i built my own turbo system for my prelude and sell a comparable kit for any Honda for $1800 non-intercooled, $2200 intercooled. if you're in the area, i include the install together with kit for $3000 |

if you're just starting out, which we all had to do sometime, i'd suggest you take your time to research and not rush into things....you'll end up saving time, money, and a lot of frustration. so many people buy shoddy parts just because they can afford them now, only to replace them later with what they really wanted...or their engines aren't strong enough, and they end up blowing parts left and right, and have to shell out the dough for a new motor.
your first step should be to decide exactly what you want to do. you mentioned that you want to go turbo, but do you know why you want to go turbo??? i'm not trying to be condescending about it....but you should know what you're getting into, and what you're other options are. You can go all motor, turbo, supercharge, nitrous...there are pros and cons to all of them, and everyone has their own preference...you need to decide what yours is. Then you need to figure out all the parts you need. going turbo doesn't normally mean getting a turbo kit and you're done. if that's the route you decide to go with, you're going to need/want a slew of other stuff....and if you're like most people and want to run more boost, you're going to have to build your motor, or you'll end up blowing it. so you're going to be putting a lot of money into it even before you get the turbo...that is, if you want to do things the smart way. make a list of everything you'll need...find out who makes quality stuff, and who makes crap....get prices. you'll probably end up with a huge list, and a whopping total cost, but you just need to make dents in it little by little. it's really important that you have a goal though. also, do a lot of reading...don't just look at the pretty pictures in those magazines, read everything, especially the tech articles....there's a wealth of information online...a good start is howstuffworks.com...hee hee...seriously, it is though....find out how an engine works, what those parts do, and why you're swapping them out....find out how a turbo works, and a supercharger, etc. whew! that was a whole lot of pretending i know what i'm talking about...did it work?

I agree with ludegirl. KNOWLEDGE EMPOWERS. When I first got my license I didn't know much and I just wanted a "cool" car. Good thing my parents don't have any money and I got a couple years to do some research. But really there is nothing greater than knowing all of your possible options, and going from there. If you want to soup your car up asap, then I suggest you find someone knowledgable about all types of setups and see what they suggest. Don't be afriad to ask questions either.
Either way, I wish you luck Maurice |

Re: If anyone could help me out that would be great!!
i'd like to add, your going to a need a stronger transmission, and probably a high performance clutch. it all adds up, i think an engine swap to a b18 would be more reliable, but your still going to need a new trans for sure. later on if you feel you need more power, you can boost the b18 which would probably make more sense then to boost a sohc engine. good luck!

Get the book "MAXIMUM BOOST" by: Corky Bell... It will give you a good foundation to start building on. It can be ordered online, or found at any of the larger bookstores...
Might check into getting a super charger instead. They are much more reliable along with a $hitload load of low end torque rather then a turbo. Otherwise why is the FI forums filled with so many probs... hehehe Also there is less chance of blowing an engine, due to componet failure. Another thing to keep in mind, is having a back-up source of transportation along with a spare block, when things do go wrong. Very seldom will you have a second chance, when comes to FI of any kind. It's not as easy as peeps make it sound. Both sc and turbos have there drawbacks, just depends on what your willing to live with...

alright there are there are a few uneducated comments made but everyone seems to believe theirselves i guess thats all that matters first of all you need different headers for a bought turbo home made turbo just depends on how you make it. cause the turbine is in the turbo no the exhaust pipes n e way second new transmission wouldnt be necessary but heavier clutch would depending on how much boost you wanna run. and one person was right if you get a turbo kit you are gonna want quite a bit to go along with it. i use to have a 97 civic ex good car but i dont like SOHC i think its good that more people are getting into the import scene my shop which is MODIFYD can find many things for you but i am sure you can find a shop closer to you that can provide parts for you oh ya dont listen to drift he's confused
