COMPLETED: Tuned WRX *Beware 56k*
As some of y'all might remember, I was creating my own hood for my WRX. Well, it's been done for a while now and I just thought about getting pics of it up.
The interior is Black with gold insets. The headlamps are gold, and the rears are black. White body with a black hood. I must say that this wasn't my best paint job. Also, the hood isn't actually that flat in real life, I guess it was just the lighting that made it look like a ricer civic hood. Now, for the pics. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Cool white wrx. The hood however looks like an 8th grade science project volcano...Heh..just messin man. You should try doing the window trim, and the weather stripping around the doors. Other then that, keep up the awsome work.

I haven't posted here in forever, but...
Holy crap dude...I'm not feeling the gold everywhere, but if that's your tastes, go for it. As far as the body work...you could really use some sandpaper to smooth all of that putty out. Other than that...this is one speachless subie lover...

Re: COMPLETED: Tuned WRX *Beware 56k*
Oh, I sanded that hood down for hours, even used a dremel. The problem I guess was with the putty, it left gaps and didn't compact down right, guess that's what I get for using the green putty. I could have also used some more styrene. I just did the gold because I wanted to have that hispanic/ricer/high class feel all in one. Also, I couldn't think of anything else to go with the wire besides white. I could easily do the window trim in black, but I'm not sure about the door panels cause I've never done it before.
Door panels: Can I just water down the paint alot, brush it on then whip it off with a paper towel, or is there a better method? Thanks for the feed back. Oh yea, the hood was going to be carbon fibre, but I never got a sheet ordered, but I could do that now that I have a credit card. =) |

If everyone doesn't like your hood, well, they might just be trying to help, but it is coming out almost mean. If you don't like it though, you should/could redo it. You can mask off the body with tape so you don't get it scratched 1st. Then go to town on the hood with some 180 grit or lower sandpaper for more refined sculpting. Putty can be a bitch at times...Ask willimo. It takes some time and practice, some mess ups, and some luck. You should get yourself a nice variety of sandpaper grits and a small file set. Once you get the hood in check, and you get your cf decal, it will be so much more awsome. And you seem to be taking the constructive criticizm pretty well. Live and learn and good luck man. Re: COMPLETED: Tuned WRX *Beware 56k*
It was my first putty job, so I wasn't expecting anything good. I might try the sanding once I finish my other 8 models that I got last week. Would the carbon fibre, not make it look smoother? Should I try that before I sand it and repaint?

Honestly? The cf wouldn't hide that much. It might even amplify the lumps and bumps.

Re: COMPLETED: Tuned WRX *Beware 56k*
sorry man, I hope u don't get offended at the comments. Here is what i think. I think other than the hood this is a very nice clean, and very well done build. I think that the hood just grabs everyones attention first, cause i know it did mine, and it doesn't look the best in the world. But it could also be a lot worse, don't get me wrong. I personally would redo the hood cause it would do nothing but add to the build, but it is ultimately your decision............................*Ryan*

Re: COMPLETED: Tuned WRX *Beware 56k*
I hold nothing against y'all for having disgust in the hood. I could try to sand it down more, it could have been that I didn't use a rough sandpaper, but just a fine grit so it didn't level it out like it should have. But, thanks for the comments, and if y'all could say something besides about the hood, I would appreciate it.

Re: COMPLETED: Tuned WRX *Beware 56k*
The rest of the build is very nice and very well done. I personally don't like the gold/white combo but that is still well done. Good job. As for the hood, ya you should use a very ruff sand paper to get the general shape and then gradually get finner in grits to smooth it out. you will need to gradually go up in grits tho cause the rough grits will leave some fairly deep gouges and scratches in the putty. And don't worry i'm pretty sure that we all sucked when we first started using putty, I know that I did........................*Ryan*

Re: COMPLETED: Tuned WRX *Beware 56k*
Here's a tip.
When using putty, don't pile it on and then try to shape the hood from the pile of putty. Use styrene strips to get the basic outline of the shape your going for then add just enough putty to fill the gaps or add the right curve to the opening in the hood. When you add putty a little bit at a time you can smooth it out while it's still wet and then you don't have to sand for hours. If I was you I would not spend anymore time sanding the hood, just learn from the mistake. You could sand on all that putty for years and It will always have lines and indentions. Save your CF for the next model. Just keep at it, each model will be better than the one before. Ps... Think you could make the pics a bit smaller? |
