Unhappy How do I find position 1 on distributor cap?

I removed the spark plug wires from my distributor cap and now don't know where they go! I know the order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, and I watched the arm rotate clockwise, but I don't know where position 1 is on my Borg-Warner replacement cap.
I tried a few possibilities, but just got jets of gas vapor shooting out the carburetor (air filter is removed) -is it possible something else is wrong?

Well your suposed to mark it before you take them off, but look on the ring on top that holds the wires in, (if you have 1), they are usually marked.

The hard way:

Pull #1 plug, crank motor untill you hear the wooosh, from the plug hole, now look on the balancer for the notch, and line it up with the TDC mark, the rotor should now be pointing to #1 position in the cap.

Happy Motoring:sun:
