Speed Sensor

Is there a difference between Speed Sensor for the ABS system and an ABS Wheel Speed Sensor??

The reason I ask is because we took our ranger and got a diagnostic done and it came up "Speed Sensor A malfunction". We have an ABS and Check Engine Light on. (Auto Transmission / 2.5Ltr / 2WD).

But... i dont know if this is the correct part, or if they are one in the same...

Thanks in advance!!

Give and it will be given onto you. QUOTE

If this ranger is a 99, then it very well could have a redundant speed sensor that is mounted on top of the differential. It controls the rear abs as well as the transmissions shift points. When mine malfunctioned the abs light and check engine light came on. My transmission shifted at 20 mpg (dont know the rpm) but it shifted with a good kick in the butt. I think Ford got away from Abs sensors on all wheels either in 99 or before. The only place I could find one was at the dealer for around $21.00, which surprised the heck out of me. I thought I would pay dearly for this gadget. It was fairly easy to change and it cured the problem. Be careful if you do it yourself, dont let any dirt fall into the differential, clean the underbelly before getting under the truck. There is one bolt and a hold down bracket, holding it in place. I hope this helps, its been quite sometime since I changed mine. The old one acted like a magnet and had metal shavings attracted to it. (I dont know if that's normal, but my truck has been running just fine since I changed it.) Rick
