BigL or GTP Dad please help

97 gt 3800 Afew weeks ago i started hearing a click coming from the direction of the fuse box and the radio and clock shut off. Afew seconds later it will click again and they will come back on. this happens while driving, idling whether car is hot or cold. Doesnt happen every trip or day. The radio and clock was all i noticed at first (dash lights stay on head lights stay on) but then i noticed that when its making the clicking noise that i lose power to the windows and over head lights. It doesnt have any SES or any other lights coming on. where should i start or what to do any help would ba appreciated.

Re: BigL or GTP Dad please help

I have checked every wiring diagram I can find on the Grand Prix and cannot find a circuit breaker anywhere in the circuits you mentioned except one for the power windows. It sounds like there is a relay or circuit breaker tripping in the system somewhere and then resetting itself. You may want to check you fuse block and see if a fuse has been replace with a breaker or relay. I really can't find any other reason that this would be happening unless one of the grounds is loose and then is making contact and the click you hear is the transfer of voltage. Good Luck! Maybe Big-L will have some better ideas.

Dad,
Doesn't the radio(and clock) have a timer on it, so when you turn the car off, it won't run down the battery? When that goes off it clicks.
Had radio diagram around here someplace. Will look for it and send it to you.

Dad,
Here's what I have on the 1997 Radio. You may have to blow them up.

Hey what's up Jim (KustomKid54). Whats the story on Big-L? Guys a great information source but I see you're doing a great job filling in. Don't you just hate electrical problems on these things.....lol.

Found an interesting graphic for you. I see you're doing a good job evading and alluding the internet police. BTW - We hit 105 degrees today. Later.

Have a feeling that the cops will be hot. Read last post.
Emailed Big-L 3 or 4 times. Don't know. Maybe his computer died. Or he doesn't like us anymore.
Saved Taz. He will return someday.

Re: BigL or GTP Dad please help

You are correct but I think the timer is in the power circuit that controls both the interior lights and the radio. I will recheck my book when I get home this evening to see if I can find where it is located and where it is wired. I can see the common wiring on this diagram but it does not actually tell where the timer is located. The diagram just isn't clear enough for me to see. Obviously it is malfunctioning causing everything to turn on and off.

Re: BigL or GTP Dad please help

Yes my computer would not send the post and I stopped it the computer reposted it three times. The radio circuit does not power the timer as it must be a part of the BCM. I can't find one on the wiring diagram for the 97 model but if the car was produced in late 97 there is a possibility that the car has one. The wiring diagram for the 98's shows one clearly. Look to see if the BCM is present and if it is changing it or checking the connections may correct the problem.

Thanks for the kudos Jim but it looks like you guys are doing a great job on this one. First off, I hate throwing in my 2 cents on electrical problems of this nature. Don't know how technical the person needing help is and their capability. Too many variables.

I do agree 100% that it is most likely a BCM (Body Control Module) related problem. Under the dash to the left hand (driver's) side are two modules. I'm not sure about a pre 1997.5 GP GT. One has relays and a circuit board. The relay the guy hears klicking is on one of these. The only work or experience I have on one of the modules is disabling the daytime running lights (DRL) on a 2001 GP GT and that was 2 years ago. BTW - It's pretty hard to troubleshoot in that area, especially since you'll be laying on your back and looking up. Like GTP Dad suggested the connectors would be a good starting point. Unless he gets lucky by replacing one of the modules, he'll need schematics and a digital multimeter for more in depth troubleshooting, if necessary.

All I can say otherwise is good luck!

Re: Re: BigL or GTP Dad please help

Here's a pic of the original 1997 GP GT BCM (Body Control Module). The AC Delco part numbers are 10427830, 10427831, 10439803 depending on keyless entry options, etc. GM recommends ID by the original part number on the BCM.

Hope the info helps.

Let us know what they find out when you get the verdict from the mechanic.
