Steering Shutter Problems

I have a '01 Ford Explorer Sport. Have 32K miles on it - no offroading, only highway driving. Replaced brakes on Friday - service tech noted a steering shudder on low speed turns - both right and left. Complained of a noise in the front end to the dealer back in December and fear this problem is related. They lubed the dry steering stops to repair, but still noticed noise/vibration. When the brakes were replaced Friday, there now appears to be a significant vibration in the steering. Any ideas, etc.?

Did you replace or have the rotors turned/resurfaced? You more than likely have what is known as disc thickness variation (dtv). This is caused by uneven wear patterns or lining transfer build up on the rotor surface. I would recommend replacing the pads w/ a good semi-met pad (bendix metal master, etc.) Stay away from the O.E. service pads, since these will be the same as what came on the vehicle. The O.E. pad material is probably what caused your problem to begn with.

mine does that sometimes when i turn right and brake at the same time at low speeds

This concern is present at low speeds or at a complete stop, correct?
If so, this is a normal operation of this vehicle. What is happening
is that air is getting trapped inside the power steering rack and the air is causing the concern. Common concern among customers and there is no servicable action even from Ford. Your brakes have nothing to do with this whatsoever. You might want to try to turn your steering wheel all the way until it stops and swith the ignition of and let it pressure bleed the system. Do it in both directions. If you would like to check
to confirm air is trapped, open the power steering reservoir and you will probably see the tiny air bubbles coming.
