Primer Cracking

Okay, does primer usually "crack"? I did a quick light coat for the first coat, let it dry over night. It looked like it was cracking around the rear bumper. Sanded it out a bit, washed it off and let it dry for 24hrs. Next day I brushed it off and blew it off just to make sure. Went out and did a heavier "cover" coat. Got some more cracks on it. Is that normal? Will I be able to just kinda sand them out and hide that in the final coats?

I learned something the other day...
I stripped the paint off a body with CSC and the only place the primer really stuck was on the places I had done body work (filled and sanded).
So, on my next project I sanded the body with some very fine sandpaper (1600) before priming.

Your problem may be due to mold release left on the body or even due to body oils from handling the parts before painting.
You've already tried to re-coat the parts, so stripping or sanding to bare plastic is the only thing I would try.

Well, I did sad with wet 800, then 1200 paper before the first coat. When I was handling the car, I only held it from the inside. That's kinda weird!? Maybe my primer is just no good

Re: Primer Cracking

hi!
why don't you try this insted from teh same place http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXVC46&P=7 either in grey or white. I've found tamiya primers to be excellent so far.
I'm not sure how the $/oz compares (couldn't do teh math ) but they've worked every time for me so far.

I will try that. Those are what I wanted to buy, but their out of stock until at least mid-may because of the whole labeling problem

Re: Primer Cracking

I suspect its the weather thats causing the cracks on your primer. Check the level of humidity in your area, make sure you don't spray on days with high humidity.

Yeah....I'm on Long Island. If I have to wait for days with low humidity, I might as well quit now
