Noob Questions with pics

Alrighty, here are some pictures of my engine (3.8L V6)

This pic shows where my intake comes in, right behind the driver's side headlight.

Here is where that runs to.

What i am wondering is this; does this already count as a cold air intake?
Would it be beneficial to make just the very outer intake port larger? Would i need to make the entire intake housing larger? What would i have to do to convert this to cold air intake? Thermal protection on the intake housing?

Thats basically it for now.... thanks for any help.

Re: Noob Questions with pics

Welcome to AF- Next time post this in the off topic forums one page back.

Step One: Dont worry about the intake yet. Pull that bitch out and send it to a machine shop. While there get some forged pistons and have it bored lets say .030 over.

Step 2: Go to your local dealer and order a supercharger and smaller pulley's for it.

Step 3: Dont worry about converting to a CAI because it will already be fast enough..

in case you can't tell, thats a Non-superchared 3800 Series I

Yes, that is a cold air intake, however, it has a very very restrictive intake silencer & snorkel that really hurts throttle response. You'd be best off taking it all apart and finding out where the smallest openings are and opening up or eliminating them.

To the original poster, that is your stock intake (as I'm sure you already know) generally cold air intakes are aftermarket intakes that go down a bit further...as it seems you know as well) I don't mean to argue semantics...but I don't know anyone who would refer to a stock intake as a cold air intake. Now as to the issue of switching to a CAI. Because they are so similar this is why intakes don't really add that much hp. By switching to a CAI, you will eliminate a few of the stock restrictions in airflow...you will also switch from a paper filter to an open-element cone filter that will allow a bit more airflow. So, NO you don't have a CAI, it is something a bit different. Switching to an open-element air filter is a good beginning mod, but don't expect huge HP gains...you probably wont even notice the difference except for the louder tone of your engine.

I have an idea to save you all that trouble. Buy a new car.
