Question My brand new car makes a loud noise when I brake... ???

Ok, just took delivery of a brand new 2005 Hyundai Elantra GLS. The car drives fine and all is well, except for one thing.

While the car is slowing there is no noise and everything slows as it should, however, RIGHT when the car stops I get a large noise from the rear brakes. It's kind of a rubber gripping sort of "THUMP" that just happens. I don't feel anything through the pedal and the car remains stopped, but, no matter what I do, the car always makes the grippy sounding thump when it comes to a complete stop.

It's been like this since I picked it up, and since I have put nearly 500 miles on the car, it's still as loud now as it with 10 miles on it.

Like I said, it stops fine with no pedal or car vibration, but the noise is quite annoying, when you buy something brand new you expect atleast quiet brakes.

Any thoughts? Could it be a serious problem or something that will go away during the break in period?

Let me add, a good buddy of mine has exactly the same car I do, a 2005 Elantra GLS, same specs different color. He only has about 200 miles on his and there is ZERO noise from the brakes, so I know it's not just part of the Elantra spec.

Thanks for any help all, I prefer to be a little informed before I drag my car into the dealership for service.

Not normal, won't go away, take it to the service department and have a tech go with you on a ride. Make sure he/she hears the noise, then don't pick it up until the noise is diagnosed and fixed.

This may sound stupid but sometimes when they ship cars they sometimes put cardboard over the breaks or a bag to keep them from getting damaged on the road over to you just a thought that you may want to check and make sure that your breaks have a clear path to the breakpad. And it may be the break cables you may wana make sure they are tightly connected.
