Subaru WRX (Progress)

Just got this kit today with some assorted styrlene sheets and green putty. I will be making a custom hood for it as I don't like the stock one. I will also be ordering a cf decal sheet to carbonize the hood and trunk. The body will be white with the cf hood, trunk, and spoiler. I am not sure about interior colors, but would like some ideas. Also, I need some TE-37's that are the same gold as the stock rims. Well, since I can't crop and resize the pictures at the moment, I'll let y'all google over the reference pics.

I will be making the hood look like the second picture and the spoiler will look totally different also. Think old school Mustang spoiler which was part of the trunk.

Re: Subaru WRX (Progress)

Good Luck, alot of work ahead of you. I suggest you do alot of research before tampering with CF decal, its expensive, and takes alot of practice.

Edit Almost forgot..

I know that Feint is about to start an angry mob here if I don't get some pictures up soon, so, without further delay, here are some progress pics.

It's so beautiful in the box. Even though the side was bent in, no damage done to the pieces.

Filled in the hood scoop with a piece of styrelene.

Sanded down the spoiler mounts on the trunk.

Layer of putty applied and drying.

First sanding

Second layer of putty applied and sanded.

Same, but with a shadow for a different look.

Tomorrow, I will figure out the hood scoop and possible start making it.

Hey,

Is that guacamole coloured putty squadron green? lol I want a flat hood!! If you think it is possible, can you cast the plain rs hood? Or have you done too much bodywork already? Eh...looks good so far. Does this mean your model will be havong a fmic now since you've taken the scoop out? Keep up the awsome work!

The only way I will be able to cast it is if I cut the hood of the body and I really don't want to do that. Filling the hole isn't hard. Just make a piece of styrelene a bit smalle than it, but large enough so it catches the lip. I taped the underside of the styrelene to the bottom of the hood so it wouldn't move while puttying. As for the fmic, I have no clue what that is. And, since it is a curbside (damn you Tamiya) I really don't have to cut the hood off. I'm drawing the spoiler out on paper so y'all can get a look at what I am going to try to make it.

Well, I glued on the styrelene form and let it dry. Applied one nice think layer of putty and sanded down. Added a second layer, sanded that also. Applied a third, used a dremel sander at 5k rpm to sand. There are still some spots that need to be filled and will be done so tomorrow, then it get another coat of primer and hopefully, the first coat of color.

I am now thinking of just making the hood black and not useing a cf decal because of the odd shape of the hood. My spoiler idea didn't work out like I hoped, so I just rounded the trunk out and it needs another coat of putty to fill in the holes.

Interior, so far no pictues, but it is black with gold insets.

I have shapped it down some, but there a quite a bit of gaps that need to be filled in with some more putty and sanded down till smooth. The trunk also needs to be smoothed down. Question: Is it okay to use rubber gloves when working with green putty so I can push the putty into the holes without trying to get it in with the scrape? I ask this, because the piece I'm using to put the putty down with doesn't seem to be laying it down right and I think I could do better with my fingers. I'm also happy that the dremel works so well to sand it down. Got a nice curve out of it with it. So much easier than using sandpaper.

Re: Subaru WRX (Progress)

maybe i missed it, but why would you spray it world rally blue, then do all the body mods and putty work?

ps the new scoop looks like the invader hood. when it comes out it will look spectacular.

It was molded in the blue and the other spruces were blue and others were black. The hood is my own little rendition of the invader hood. Still haven't gotten that last coat of putty on and am hoping to be able to do it tomorrow.

Re: Subaru WRX (Progress)

You should have made the hood scoop with styrene, would have been more easier and less messy. Not to include less work.

Looking foward for more progress!

I made the base frame out of styrene and then puttied around it. I guess I could have flared the sides out more like I made the putty. But hey, live and learn.

Re: Subaru WRX (Progress)

Im with Josh. You effort looks good but I think I would have used styrene completely and just some putty to smooth transitions. It would save you a lot of time, and money because if the putty is one part something that in depth with crack, crumble, shrink, and loose form and mess up a perfect paint job.

Looking forward to more.
