Mufflers
What is a decent performing muffler for a '94 Honda Accord EX? I'm looking for a good cost-performance solution...don't wanna have to pay an arm and a leg. The most I wanna pay is $100. Keep in mind I ONLY need the muffler...not the whole system. Any help would be appreciated. Thnx.

Uhhh... for $100? Well then, I suggest you pick up a JC Whitney catalog or something similar, and get yourself a 2.25" diameter glass pack, perhaps with a turbolator or similar exhaust tip. If you are serious about sticking to $100 bucks, you are really cutting your foot off when it comes to aftermarket performance exhausts. I don't think I've seen anything (i.e. that is anything NEW) in this regard for less than $300 to $400. But I think a glass pack muffler, either at this diameter or fit to your current exhaust diameter (get it checked - I believe your exhaust is 1 7/8" diameter) would be your best bet for cost. You could go straight pipe, but I know I sure as hell don't want to be driving around in something that loud (and the cops won't be liking you either).

LOL. But I just need the muffler. You're telling me that performance mufflers themselves are $300-400? Shiet. Maybe I need another job to pay this crap off!!! LOL
The reason I say "under $100" is because I feel I can get something decent, or something better than just stock exhaust shiet. For instance, Flowmaster mufflers, which I know isn't the BEST brand by any means, are like $30-80...depending on the series. My bro has a 50 series Flowmaster on his 240sx. It boosts HP pretty good, but it's too damn loud. Well, I'll be looking around some more. Help is always appreciated.

Always remember the golden rule.
You get what you pay for. Pay nothing, get nothing. Also as far as "It boosts HP pretty good". Have you ever put the car on a dyno (before and after)? Does it REALLY boost the horsepower? or does it just feel like it because it's louder? or maybe the clerk at Napa told you it would? Either way no dyno numbers no truth to it. Just save three times as much, it may take 3 times longer to get that exhaust, but in the long run you'll get something better than say blowing a $100 bucks on some cheapo and then regretting it later. Good luck And for crying out loud STAY THE HELL AWAY from the Coffee can exhausts. PLEASE

Yeah, I agree. Don't worry about me getting a Bomb muffler (I think that's what they're called). Yes, I have a 4 cyl, but it's not a 4 cyl. go-cart and I have no idea why people want their cars sounding like one. When I said "It boosts HP pretty good", I meant that I have physically driven the car before and after and noticed somewhat of a difference. Yes, it is a lot louder but I don't think that affected it. Thnx for your comments. I agree when you say to pay more now, rather than paying for a POS and regretting it later. Well, later guys. Thnx again.

wow.... do you know about the bomb at all? i have one on my lude, and i redid the whole exh up to it in 2.25in piping... all mandrel bent...
it is deep, loud, powerful, and hell, it sounds good when you echo off a bridge... it is even decent with the insert in. but the fuggin thing is 189. there are other muffs out there with tips on em for around 129ish... that is the cheapest you are gonna get... they are made my arospeed, pilot motorsports, toucan, vibrant... hell they are all the same universal muffler anyways... just figure that an oval or large circular body will be quieter than a slim circle like the bomb... but they are all pretty much straight thru designs... decent power if you add the bigger pipe from the cat... but it seems you dont wanna do that... |

It's not possible.
Your stock piping is 1 and 1/4 "... so you woudl need a massive adapter to convert it to the 2.5" muffler. get a cat back system for like 300 bucks. It's worth the money. |

Hey everyone, I have no knowledge in anything about car modifications.
![]() So, what does that cat thing do and why should I get one? I am interested in a muffler too for my Honda Accord 99 EX V4. Paying around $200-300 for a muffler is good enough, right? I was wondering....if you add a muffler, do you have to change anything else so nothing will mess up the engine or so? Thanks

the cat, short for catalytic converter is an emissions device. It is basically a device that looks like a muffler that is installed inline with your exhaust about half way between the engine and the muffler. inside this device is a honeycomb like structure which is made up of several different 'catalysts' ( platinum, and a few others) Basically when the pollutants from your engine pass through the cat, the substances in the converter react with the pollutants to convert them to less harmful substances like Carbon Dioxide and water. without a cat, you will not pass the emissions test.
With that being said, the cat is also one of the most restrictive portions of your exhaust. some people install "high flow" catalytic converters, which can be had for about 200-300 dollars. others choose to remove the stock one, and "gut" out the insides. still others remove it all together and install a straight pipe in it's place... the last two options are not legal, but will give you the most performace gains. Especially if your car is turbo charged. A high flow converter is the only legal way to upgrade that portion of your exhaust system. A "cat back" exhaust system is just as it sounds... It is a new exhaust system that replaces every stock component from the catalytic converter on back to the muffler. Generally employing larger diameter piping, mandrel bends ( smooth bends, instead of the rippled kind), and a straight through flow design muffler. You wont see big gains from a cat back system on a typical honda 4cyl engine.. if you install only a muffler, it will have to have the same stock diameter piping as the rest of your system. which is probably around 1.5 inches. you really wont see much if any of a gain from this mod... other than a louder sound. On the dyno you would be lucky to see 1 or 2 HP from this modification... If you got headers, A high flow cat, and a cat back system for your 4cyl accord, despite what the magazines say, you could see somewhere in the vicinity of a 10Hp gain at the wheels. and that is with a significant investment.. (300 for headers, 300 for cat, 300 for exhaust) If you are looking for power gains, the muffler is not a good place to look, although it is generally a necasary step in the process of boosting power. If all you need is a replacement muffler for your stock one, and you dont care about performance, look into a DynoMax. I had one installed on my 91 accord, with a little bit of creative welding and alot of ugly mess, they were successful in installing a 2.5" diameter muffler on my stock system. it sounded good. not too loud, and cheap. ( 150?) |

THanks for the help.
Is it okay to leave the cat stock version under your car and just add a muffler? I want something decent that won't be too loud. :sun: I am not going for any speed gains or turbo on my car....I just want to modify it for looks. I am installing a muffler for the sound, and not for any speed or HP gains. Thanks for the information again. Cya

Yeah if you just want a louder sound, just getting a good muffler will do the job. You dont need to change anything else.

Speaking of mufflers.
Now I could care less about the cost. But right now I would like to replace my stock muffler with a chrome muffler or just have chrom tips welded on. Key thing here is, I want NO sound change at all. I love the way my car sounds. It is has a deep growl to it. I want this to purly cosmetic. This all come about because the place I had paint my car painted the exuast black. How I am not sure being there is nothing black on my car. So right now I have some screwed on checker auto tips. They look ok, but will eventually rust the tips and themselfs. Now does anyone know of some mufflers that won't change my sound just the looks? I know there are tips that won't. |
