B16A Conversion
If anyone could help me out with a couple questions I have it would be greatly appreciated.
Can a 88-91 B16A fit in a 93 Ex with no ploblems? Will it bolt to the stock tranny or will I have to get a gearbox that came with the B16? Any computer problems? Or should I just build up my D Series motor... |

I wouldn't bother to build up your D-series motor. It would cost close to a thousand dollars for just the Breather mods and you'd still be getting smoked by most of the imports out there. Have you ruled out the b16a2 engine in the Si?

No, the B16 is not a direct bolt up swap. If you want a direct swap, go for the ZC. There are places that sell the kits for the B16 swap, like place racing, to name one. I agree with Azz, dont really waste too much money on your D16. If you really wanted to contend with that motor, it would cost a pretty penny.

Companys like Hasport make mounts kits that will alow you to install a B16a yourself if your mechanicly inclined. And theres plenty of resources on the net with instructions about wiring.
You will need a later tranny though, from any B series engine car with a Hydrolic Clutch. (the 90-91 B16a came with a Cable Clutch equiped tranny), and you will need an ECU from a B series engine, either the JDM one, or any of the USDM ones. So any G/box and ECU from either a JDM or USDM 92- on B series powered car, Del Sol, later Si Civic, GSR Teg will do, all you need to do when chossing a tranny is get the gear ratios that will suit you. (I recomend the Civic Si(R), or Delsol.) Apprently all the ECU's will do the same job, whether its for a B18, or a B16. Not living in the states and already ownig a factory B16a powered car I have no idea what it's going to cost you, or the exact details invovled, but it sounds like a fairly common and relativly easy swap. However there is no need to go for a JDM engine, as the USDM B16a will also do the same Job. If you do want a JDM engine then get the later B16a from the 92+ SiR, it has an extra 10hp. If you want to build the engine curently in the car, and make it comparable to a B16a swap, then you really need to consider either spending lots of time and money getting it built properly with a good cam and head porting, or going with a good Turbo or Super Charger install. However I think a B16a swap will give you the best bang for your bucks.

Nope, D-Seiries and Bseries tranny's are not interchangable. as well as the ECU's.

It also really depends on what you want out of your engine in the end. The SOHC VTEC is a good engine, but it will cost you around the same as a B16A swap to get the same power, but more can be done to the B16A down the road for even more power. The D-series engines will hold about a maximum of 200 hp safely on stock internals, after that expect a to toss a rod, crack a piston, or spin a bearing. The B16A I believe has a critical horsepower ceiling of about 300 on stock internals.
I on the other hand, would not even bother with a VTEC engine. I would much rather have a B18A/B, even if doesnt have as much power as the B16A.
