99 Gran AM headlight replacement

Does anyone know the secret to removing and replacing the headlights on a 99 Grand AM? it looks like you have to disassemblr the entire front end!! It can't really be that hard, can it?

Re: 99 Gran AM headlight replacement

I just looked at my Haynes manual and it says there are two types.

For the fires type: remove the two thumb screws and tilt the assembly forward and lift. Unplug the electrical connector, loosen the rotating lock and temove the bulb. On some modles it may be necessary to remove the side marker lamp before removal of the headlight assembly.

For the second type: remove the headlight bezel front facia screws lens housing bolts and headlight lens assembly screws.
Installation is the reverse of removal.

Hope this helps.

Welcome to the Forum.

Re: 99 Gran AM headlight replacement

yeah, it not that difficult, but the mount screws for the bezels or mount-assembly can be a bit difficult to find. the mount screws/bolts are TORX head, so ya need a few Torx bits, size is , I believe T-10 or 15. Get a few sizes anyway, you'll be using them.

You have two types, a sealed-beam and a composite headlight to choose from. your ride has one of these two systems. look at the wiring harness attached to the headlight, if it looks like the harness attaches to a plug that will twist open and pull out of the headlight, then ya have the composite halogen, replace bulb only type.

If the harness looks like it attaches to three metal terminals only off the headlight, ya have the sealed beam type.

I almost guarantee ya have the composite style, since your ride is a '99. Check it out, call a parts store or surf www.autozone.com to find which system ya have, and let us know. Either Dan or I can then tell how to handle the precise system ya have, K?

Re: 99 Gran AM headlight replacement

if ur changing the headllight and the 99 GA is the same as the 2001 like mine all you have to do is pull 2 tabs up on the left and right side of each light and the whole thing will pop right out instead of taking the whole front end apart

I have a '99 and it's not very difficult. The only part of the car you have to remove is the black plastic piece that runs the width of the car under the hood, just behind the grill. There are black clips that hold it down. Just pry them up with a screwdriver and it lifts right off. That gives you access to the headlight assemblies. Then, to remove the headlight assemblies, just pull up on the two "quick clips" behind each headlight and the assembly should pull right out. From there, just turn the socket for the light that needs to be replaced and pull it out.

Thumbs up Re: 99 Gran AM headlight replacement

Pull the two tabs up yes.....you may need to have some pliers to assist you. they do not need to pull all the way out. you will see. when pushing them back in just tap and there are little grooves that have to go back in. also when removing the bezel use a screwdriver to pop up the plastic pins before you try to pry the washer out.
