not so technical but need help gas lid

Popped open gas lid to fill up, now it won't close. its hitting the button that pops it. Strangely it almost seems as if the whole lid has shifted to the right but how could that be? i am tempted to file off the button that recedes to pop it and make it manual. if i understand correctly when you pop the tank open the button pulls back causing the lid to spring open. when you close it the lid snaps back over the button. so if it won' close now, then what has happened?
