FYI: Bad business, Pep Boys.
Not sure if this applys to everyone, because I'm not sure of the national spread of this automotive retail chain.
I recently sold the Cobra R rims from my Mustang to a friend on another forum (Charles), who was picking them up for his buddy. His buddy brought the rims to Pep Boys in West Springfield to have them balanced, not a bad idea I guess to make sure the rims were true before installing on his car. Well, Pep Boys, told him that one of the rims had a bad bend, which needed 6-7 ounces to correct, and since it was so much they would not balance them. I got a phone call later that night from Charles, saying his buddy wanted his money back due to a "bent rim." I found it extremely difficult to believe the rim(s) were bent, but agreed to return the money, understanding that I would not want this to happen to me. In my travels shortly after the phone conversation, I stopped by Pep Boys to question the service manager (Shelly), who had been the one working the night the rims were brought in. She stated that the one of the rims was badly bent and one other was a little out of whack. I asked about the previous counter weights, and her exact words were "there were no weights on the rims when they were bought in." she also stated that she had two of her mechanic look at them. I found this absolutely funny, because the rims were sold with counter weights and I never had any issues leading me to believe a rim(s) were bent. Not to mention that when I picked the rims back up from Charles, the counter weights were still intact. Still finding it extremely hard to believe that I had bent rims, just because of the fact I had two brand new tires installed and all rims balanced back in September/October, right before the car was stored for winter. I then brought the rims to Town Fair Tire in West Springfield, always being happy with their service and work, I told them my situation and what had happened at Pep Boys. After examining the rims, the conclusion was made that Pep Boys did not remove the previous counter weights prior to spin balancing (the stick on kind that go on the inside of fancy rims) and tried to install lip counter weights to the already existing stick on counter weights. It still baffles me as to why Pep Boys wanted to install lip weights on nice Chrome rims, and how negligent they were as not to see the previous counter weights. Final outcome; the rims are perfect and true. Needing between 1/4 ounce to an ounce and a half to balance out, which from what I was told is perfectly normal. It's just too bad that Pep Boys ruined the sale and cost me about $50 to have the rims checked and rebalanced.

Re: FYI: Bad business, Pep Boys.
All pep boys suck for anything more than buying cleaning supplys, and rags. they caught my dads 71 cutlass on fire back in the 80s..cracked the windshield on his 84 cutlass in the late 80s and then finally in the early 90s left several parts off of his dodge shadow. And these were all different locations. And it was all due to neglegence. Pep boys = sucks.

Re: FYI: Bad business, Pep Boys.
i agree with all of you. i had a car in pep boys down in willow grove and they put a a.c accumulator in and within a week one of the pipes burst due to a bad weld at the accumulator, on top of the fact that the job took much longer than they stated it would. must be easy to get a job down at pepboys becuase non of them know anything.. another time i was in to ask about rear hatch shocks... and another customer had to help me and tell me how to fit them on to my honda.. (which had stock ones still on it).. b/c the guy working there didnt even know. word of advice... only go to pep boys for accessories... NOTHING ELSE
