Change Engine oil light issue

My change engine oil light comes on every morning. We have recently changed the oil. I drive the car to and from school which is only about a mile away each day. Also, they gas seems to be used up quite quickly. Is this a normal problem for a 93 car or is there a problem? How do I get my change oil light off also, I have tried to use the reset button, but that didn't work. I also tried to see if discontecting the battery did anything, but no luck. Please help me. Thanks alot.

If the car has the driver information system, try pressing and holding the "oil" and the "reset" buttons together. If the car doesn't have a DIS, many GMs can be reset by turning the ignition to on (engine not running), hitting the gas pedal to the floor three times in rapid succession, and the shutting off the ignition. The light should disappear upon startup.

DIS is the full digital information found on the Regency Elite right? I will try these methods and hope that work. Thanks for the info and I'll get back to you if they do.

right now go out and pull the codes RIGHT NOW. you have a 93 so it was the last easy year to tell what you are throwing.

actually that does not apply to this car. none of it. the DIC reset method you are refering to....may apply on his but probably does not. never worked with olds before with that option but have read and know a little about pontiacs/buick stuff.

If it is the like the ssei dic's you just reset the pcm

NEVER EVER MUST YOU TAP THE PEDDLE TO THE FLOOR LIKE THAT FOR ANY PURPOSE ON THESE CARS.

The codes? I haven't done anything yet. And I would like to know if olds tend to get very gas guzzly sometimes or if I have a problem.

your car should get 20mpg city easy and 29mpg-31mpg highway stock.

I assume you are running non supercharged L27.


Pull the codes and see what is up.

they may or may not be stored since it is a 93 and they got a little bad iwth OBD1 in the 90's and worse off in 94/95 then 96 finally improved.



anyway worth a shot:

Thi is for: 1987 - 1993!

Find the "Assembly Line Communication Link (ALCL)" it usually found under the dash near the steering column. Now locate terminals "A" & "B", the 2 uppermost right-hand terminals, "A" is the one the right. You must use a short wire to ground out these terminals, or a hairclip, paperclip, or something similar. Short the terminals with the ignition off, then turn the ignition to "on" but do not start the car. The ECM will display "Code 12" by flashing the "Service Engine Soon" light indicating the system is working. Code 12 is simply one flash, followed by a brief pause, then two flashes in quick succession. This code will flash three times. If no codes are stored code 12 will continue to flash until the ground is removed from the terminal.
After flashing three times, the ECM will display any stored trouble codes. Each code will be flashed three times then code 12 will be flashed again indicating display is completed.
Note: If the trouble is intermittent the engine light will come for about ten seconds then go out. If the trouble is more serious then the engine light will stay on and the trouble codes stored in the ECM memory until voltage is interrupted to the ECM. To clear the codes, disconnect the battery for about ten minutes.

Note: If you or anyone else has disassembled the lower footwell shield (with the diagnostic connector and courtesy light in it) it is possible the connector was reinstalled upside down. In this case, the uppermost right 2 terminals are no longer A nd B! No damage will be incurred if you short these two in this instance, but you will get no codes. If this happens, try the bottom 2 terminals on the left side!
