Post '00 Noisy Front End?

This is my first post here. I rescently bought a 2000 2dr 4x4 Blazer with 81K on it. I've got a couple of questions. First the gas gauge it just flat out reads wrong. It seems to get down to 1/2 tank and then gets stuck there. To fix this, I probably need a new level sensor for the tank? and such a job requires taking the tank out? I'm guessing this is probably not a job I can pull off in my driveway with a $5 set of wrenches from walmart.

Next, the more serious question I have is in regaurd to the loud "road noise" I hear coming from the front of the truck. I've only ever driven it in 2WD mode. I've been reading about bearings and that certainly could be the sound of the bearings I hear. That flat out scares me honestly.

One thing I thought of... I don't think the previous owner greased it... ever. Could I be hearing the U joints? What's required to grease the truck? I don't have access to a lift, but I could go get a grease gun provided it's possible to do on the ground.

Also, I plan on changing the air filter and having the tranny and radiator flushed. Anything else a I can do easy with fore-mentioned walmart-special wrench set? (aside from getting a real set of tools)

Thank in advance for your time,
bigfreak

Re: '00 Noisy Front End?

Well with 5 different replies that all basically said "use F'n the search", I figured I'd search some more. By the way "vibration" gets more hits than noise.

Anyway, I'll rotate the tires and see if that changes the noise. Also, sounds like the stock u-joints dont' have grease fittings. (lame)

I'll search more next time. sorry

Gas - Likely your sending unit. Need to drop the tank
Road Noise - Could be tires, rotate and if it goes to the back, tire is your problem. If not, likely a front bearing (They are sealed and cannot be greased on the 4x4, so they are replaced as an assembly).
U Joints - stock don't have zerks. If you get a shudder under hard acceleration, they are likely shot. Will also squeek with excessive play when going from forward to reverse.
Grease points on the front. Search one of my posts for zerk locations, I included a picture.

Good luck.
