Hey everybody, just to get you up too speed, i have a 1989 GT that is a P.O.S. It runs great, but the interior is Sh**ty, i did my own body work (for my first time i am very pleased!) so the exterior is ok. I am constantly chasing electrical gremlins, and just about every part that could need to be replaced in the suspension needs replacing (bushing's, shocks, struts....). So now you can see where i screwed up by buying a pos to begin with, i now have a chance to buy an immaculate 86 GT. I know they are down on horses and TQ compared to other years, but this is so clean and has relativley low miles (58,000'sh) i could care less. My question is, does anyone think this year for the mustang could be a collectors item within 10 years? when i say immaculate i mean GREAT shape, completly stock, all origianal, the guy that owns it now bought it from the 1st owner in San Diego 2 years ago.

For something to be a collector's or worth money it needs to become rare and popular.
Any certain car model can become rare just give it time... popular well nothing is gonna gonna beat the 87-93 5.0's for foxes. So these cars have the best chance of becoming collector items. Buying a car in hopes it will be valuabale some day is always a bad investment. If you like the 86 GT just get it drive it enjoy and if becomes valuable well the that's just a bonus.

86 was the year that the most mustangs were ever sold... the number has yet to be beat... i cant remember the exact number but i doubt that helps it in becoming rare...

Also, if anybody is curious, the worst selling year for the Mustang was 1991. I just thought I'd throw that out there.

Year by year if anyone cares: 1965 - 680,989 1966 - 607,568 1967 - 472,121 1968 - 317,404 1969 - 302,301 1970 - 198,245 1971 - 149,678 1972 - 125,093 1973 - 135,267 1974 - 385,693 1975 - 188,575 1976 - 187,567 1977 - 153,173 1978 - 192,410 1979 - 332,025 1980 - 241,064 1981 - 162,593 1982 - 130,418 1983 - 120,873 1984 - 141,480 1985 - 156,514 1986 - 224,410 1987 - 159,145 1988 - 217,969 1989 - 209,775 1990 - 128,189 Note that 1965 numbers include the models sold in 64 as 65 models. Also note the high number in 74 which was the only year without an 8 cylinder offered |

Go for the '86, i loved mine and i wish now that i wouldnt have sold it.. and for 58,000(ish) miles, thats awesome. But beware, you could be paying for 58,000 when infact you have 158,000, check it out.

I thought the SPFI in the 302 came in '85? As I remember it did anyway.

I bought an 86 GT off the lot and I remember it was the first year without the carburator. I was upset that I missed the 4 barrels by one year and kicked myself for waiting for the 86's. Of couse Fuel injection turned out to be a good thing. I only wish I waited for the heads of 87. |

Ummm I don't know where I was mocking you.... Being a low production number does not automatically make a car a collector's item or valuable. Cause like I said in my first post rarity is gained in all cars wit time. Look no further than the 64-65 Mustangs production numbers and their value. To become a collector's item/worth money it needs popularity and rarity. Out of all the Fox Mustangs the 87-93 5.0's are easily winning the popularity and every year that goes by it's rarity is increased. Also 85 auto cars V8's had CFI which is a type of throttlebody injection. 86 was the first year of EFI which is the basis of what is used now still.
