Be forwarned 996/997 owners, the Cayman is coming.

I've been doing some research on this new auto coming out of Stuttgart in the very near future. I guess according to autoweek the Cayman S has lapped faster times at the ring than the new 355hp Carrera S. Just curious what 911 owners(particulary 996/997) think. It's kinda unPorsche like to offer more performance for less money. It seems like Porsche is purposely killing off the 911...especially since the the two look so similar.

Re: Be forwarned 996/997 owners, the Cayman is coming.

I doubt the information Autoweek got is legit. Considering that the 911 isn't specified whether it was the base Carrera or Carrera S because the Carrera time definitely varies from what is equipped. Times I've got from the Carrera S are these:

7:59 for the -20mm 997S (on Sport Mode)
8:02 for the 997S (on Sport Mode)
8:05 for the 997S (on Normal Mode)

I seriously doubt the Cayman is faster than the 997S. The Autoweek article only mentions "latest 911", which could be just a no-performance optioned base 911.

That may be true. I heard somwhere that it was the S but that information could be incorrect. Still, even if it was the base 320hp carrera, it kinda makes the car obsolete since it will probably cost at least 5-10k more than the Cayman.

Hanging the engine out behind the rear wheels isn't a great idea. It is only over come through the use of good engineering. No current race cars use a rear-mounted engine besides 911s.

Correct me if i'm wrong but the standard 911 is still rated as one of the finest drivers' cars out there, while the GT3 & GT3RS are quite simply worshipped. As for race cars i believe the GT3R's usually mop the floor with the 360 Modenas due to their superior traction?

Yes, but the Ferrari F430 may change that. There is more competition in Grand-Am Cup and the American Le Mans Series this year.

It may, it may not. It doesn't take away from the fact that the 'flawed' 911 has always been an extremely successful race car.

We'll see when the car comes out. Any information is just either speculation and/or unreliable. The Carrera has always sold well yet the Carrera S is the bread and butter most owners and soon-to-be owners are opting for uprated version. I know the Cayman and Cayman S will be exceptional cars but doubt still surrounds how it rate up against the flagship 911. Then again, at this moment in time anything can go with Porsche. Several years ago I would have not believed the Cayenne would go into fruition.

Re: Be forwarned 996/997 owners, the Cayman is coming.

Is 997 look drastically different than 996? I love 996 styling, especially for the Turbo, it would be a shame if they change the design too much. Ahhhh I so wish I could get a hold of 996 in case 997 doesn't please my eyes...

Maybe it's time to sell and get a F-car.... Don't think they'll be putting out something affordable for a while...

Depends what's more important to you. The car or the badge...

Effectively a Boxster coupe with a larger engine (3.4) on the Cayman S.
