How to break in your new G20

Hi everyone,

Just got mine today ('02 w/ sport), would like to know how to break in the car and engine for the first couple thousand miles?

Take it easy on the clutch and engine for the first 500 miles.

THEN BEAT THE SNOT OUT OF IT!

I'm actually serious. There are those who believe that if you want your car to be fast, you should break it in hard to loosen everything up nicely.:jump:

Unless you are terribly hard on the car..ie burnout starts and stops etc...I'm of the (old school?) of thought, that you drive the car the way you hope to drive it for years. Just don't abuse it at first. I've never seen where excessively babying it as the manuals claim, to make things any better. If the motor isn't right to begin with...driving 55 for 1000 mi isnt going to correct it.
I am just about to reach the 3K mark breaking in on my '01, and commute every day at 70+ occasionally backing off on the gas to keep from maintaining prolonged constant speed over 3500 rpm...thats about it. Maybe keep shifts under 5K too, at first, if you have a 5 speed. This seems to be an engine that likes and works best at higher rpm than most...so, why drive and break it in otherwise?
As for the the car itself...its good practice to avoid anything in your path (and parking lots) that might cause contact with the exterior, for the first month or so....you will sleep better too as a result

mrksn, congrats on your new car!!

As for breaking-in the car. When I got my car, I didn't go over 4000rpms, and tried to stay under 55mph, well tried... Once you hit the open roads, it's kinda hard to stay under 55. I don't know how much this helped break-in the car but I was told by a lot of my friends to not really push the car really hard until you put on 1000 miles. hope that helped... have fun!

That's what I've always heard. If something's not right in the engine, shake it loose ASAP so the warranty will take care of it.

If you're really anal, use standard oils for the first 1000-1500 miles for break-in. Then switch to synthetic to lengthen preservation. Avoid excessive stop and go traffic. Freeway driving isn't going to hurt anything. Don't treat it like a grandma, you don't want to drive it slow all the time, and avoid numerous short trips. Starting your engine is what.....80 something percent of engine wear.

Thumbs up

follow all of the above . . . especially when it comes to the part where someone mentioned not to maintain excessive rpms for a prolonged period of time . . . vary your rpms . . . give a little gas then ease off after a while . . . work out the engine allowing it to experience all areas of the powerband UNDER 5k rpm . . . for the first 2k miles . . . avoid harsh acceleration, as well as sudden deceleration (that's a word, right?) . . .

after 1k miles . . . change your oil . . .

wash it once a week with luke warm water . . .

spend lots of quiet time together . . . just caressing the steering wheel . . . and the leather seats, G's respond well to TLC . . .

LOL, yes I think you're on to something. Some gental soothing talk does wonders for my gas milage and reliability. Plus don't talk about driving other cars within earshot of your G. You never know how it will take it.

also,
When you take your G out for a fun ride.
Once you are satisfied driving around, that does not mean that you can just go home and park it.
You must make sure your G is satisfied also, you have to keep drivin her around til she's done, no matter how tired you get.
Not doing this is a tragic mistake alot of folks make.

If you obey this, your G will always be loyal, and won't stray to some other driver. Although most Infinitis are very loyal, they aint sluts like those hondoyotas...:smoker2:

Good call on this...also a reason why to try and avoid short trips is it will help on your exhaust. You will get moisture and condensation in the system if you dont get it hot enough...
