Ok here's my petpive, I currently have a mercedes 190-D my om gave it to me shortly after it went to the shop. But that's not the only time it's been to the shop as a matter a fact it's been to the shop about 10 times in the last 6 months. Then i found out they stopped making the particulary series or type or mercedes,Why ? My shop teacher says that that particular car wasn't very reliable,Is that true ? Jsut so you know we did buy the car used and it was in pretty rough condition(engine wise) but it ran good(still does) but the thing is it's getting expensive to keep up. Should I get rid of it and get another car altogether Or stick with it ? I'm not much of a mercedes tech but this car is really giving me a hard time so what do I do cause even my moms sick of it.

It's one of the most notoriously reliable cars ever made....all M-Bs are. However, they're not indestructable and if they're beaten on and neglected enough eventually something will break. Parts and labor (as I'm sure you already know) are prohibitly expensive for these cars. How many miles does it have and what is wrong with it, exactly?

Well The machanic alone is giving my mom hard times on the whole payment plan(as if we're gonna stick him or something). But on top of that the car ir self has been to the shop for radiator and tranny problems repeatedly. And it's funny cause the car really didn't have all these problems till we took it to the shop for one thing and it kept going back for all these different problems. Me and my mom had decided on selling it cause we are sick of dealing with the stupid car.Now my question was was it that it is a bad car or is it cause our machanic is an ass that we are having so many problems with this car. So can anyone help me with this problem I have ?

As seancornelis says the 190D is one of Mercedes Benz's mainstream models and a very reliable unit from new. Even today they still make for safe, dependable, economical transport but like every other make and model of car it's the condition and the upkeep that determine how you'll go, along with driver abuse
Perhaps it's plain worn out (how many miles on it again?) or your mechanic is unfamiliar with it, incompetent or just a plain greedy rip-off - setting your Mom up for a series of costly repairs? Perhaps because it's your first car you are the incompetent factor here, and would destroy any vehicle you get your hands on .. be it a Mercedes, Buick or a Sherman tank Who knows? I have a Merc, look after it, and it goes great - a pleasure to own and drive. Conversely, my uncle had a dreadful run out of his one, caused by the false economy of taking it to a cheap, shoddy mechanic who was more suited to working on clapped-out taxis. Why not get a second INDEPENDANT opinion and quote, from either your motoring organisation or a different reputable mechanic, preferably a Merc specialist, as to your 190D's condition and what future repairs are required? |

Thanks for your opinion but belive me I'm the last factor you half to worry about.Me personally I have neen buying and reading mercedes handbooks and manuals all on behalf of my shop teachersuggesting that i got to know this car and it's company. Who however the machanic indeed knows what he's doing he's just an ass I guess. But yeah we had come to the conclusion as to sell it
. Becuase well cash is low and we really really need the money . Now me on the other hand I have decided to get something A bit cheaper to maintain and someting I can be a bit more creative with so far as showing my own personality through modifactions. What did I choose for this project the Nissan 720 . Of course to you guys it may not seem like all that great of a truck but belive me they can be retty rad with the right wrench time involved. But thanks for taking the time to help me out I really appreciate it

Sorry blackbob - an insult to you was not my intention
![]() I thought seancornelis was very accurate and concise in what he wrote btw I remember what it feels like to have a cash squeeze so good luck with that. Pity you can't keep the 190. I've wondered on occasion whether either a domestic or jap V6 would fit 'em. One of my neighbours has a 720 diesel 4wd with which he highway-commutes every day - it certainly does the job. Stating the bleeding obvious I know Bob, but take care around corners in that thing after being used to the great-handling Merc, coz if it's a 4wd 720 they're not that hard to roll ps: there's a Mercedes rip-off guy near where I live - a real shonk - who takes (steals) good parts off one customer's car, to put on another! - and vice versa :zx11pisse |

Yeah I know he ment well I just wanted to make sure that he knew I wasn't all that new to the whole driving seen. Although I do wonder why parents freak over what their kids plan to do to their cars. Like my mom want buy me a sports car because she knows I'mma drive it,treat it,and modify it like a sports car. Her whole theory is a "first time driver
" doesn't need alot of power and doens't need a fast car and blah, blah, blah . So i'm forced to get whatever is whenin her perspective (whatever that is ). So I'll get the 720 (prefertably gasoline version) modify it looks wise with the bags, rims, paint, audio(you know poser racer stuff since I can't get a real sports car ). But to solve that speed problem I'll do what i can to the engine and strap a turbo or supercharger (whichever comes first) then top it off with yes nitrous but don't worry I know all about that too. Other then that that looks like what I'lll be doing.

PROUD 190D OWNER
I have a 1987 Mercedes 190D. It has 266,000 miles on it. I plan to keep it till at least 300,000. It still get 30 MPG on the freeway with it. The interior is still really good. M-Tex which is the Mercedes Vinyl is very strong. I don't know how many times when I take it in for an oil change or getting new license plates that the people who look at the Odometer misread it and think that I only have 26,000 miles on the car.
The Climate control system on them are HORRIBLE. Find an air conditioning specialist, and tell them to rig the system to not use all the flaps and servos and sensorws that are in the dash. It will cost you thousands to keep the regular A/C working, and it still won't last. (I know from experience, but we now have it sorted). It will also eat motor mounts. Have had to replace them twice in the last 3.5 years. I have a good Mercedes Mechanic, and it is not leaking oil or auto tranny fluid. It just passed DEQ (Smog) here in Oregon very cleanly. Supposedly 190Es are much more likely to fail. I have AMG style wheels on it, and Euro clear turn signals. Run diesel conditioner through it with each tank full. You want to keep your injectors clean. It handles really well, but I do wish that it hand more power. It feels great on the freeway. Do you know how to downshift the 4 speed automatic for passing, and about using the 3 dots on the speedo? Cmotif <><
