Cold War
Hey everone I'm working on my History homework where we have to interview someone about the cold war. I just got off the the phone with my grandma and got some good info from her. I am not saying anyone out there is old the cold war arguably didn't end until 1989. Its better to have interviewed more than one person. Also AF is full of people from other countries and it would be fantastic to get international answers. Especially those of people from Russia. Here are the questions
If you speak- French, Italian, Spanish, Languages Native to the Congo, or Latin (no one speaks that do they?) and don't speak enough english to answer the way you want to, just answer in your native tongue and I can have it translated out by my french teacher (she speaks 9 languages, I Speak 1 and a 1/2) Thanks So Much! |

Re: Cold War
I didn't know COT was 'study hall'...
Oh wait, it's not. So in fairness, this should be treated like every other homework thread and get locked, right?

Re: Cold War
* Do you remember a lot about the cold war? Some. Whatever we read in the newspaper or discussed in school at the time.
* What was the scariest part about the cold war for you? The time in the early '80s when relationship between the U.S. and the Soviet Union was strained. Not knowing if something could happen to piss off one of the superpowers into "pushing the button". * Who do you believe was responsible for the Cold War? Primarily the U.S. and the Soviet Union with their arms buildups. * Did you have any involvement? (I.E Were you in the military, the government, etc.) No. * Did you have a great fear that war would break out, or did you think things would turn out like they did? For awhile, it seemed like we were really headed to some major conflict. The movie "The Day After" and the song "99 Luftballoons" portrayed some of the feelings of the time. After 1986 it seemed like things were getting better. * What was the general opinion of the Cold War (Public Opinion)I tend to think people thought that the Cold War had gone on long enough and more was needed tro be done to solve the problems and work towards peace. * Did you hear about it in the press often?Sometimes it wouldn't be mentioned in the news that often, while at other times it seemed to be mentioned everyday in the paper, and evening news. * Do you remember if you had a plan for a nuclear attack? Not myself, as there really wasn't much you could do in the event of a surprise attack. My brother and sisters are much older than me, and were in school during the '50s and '60s and would have to practice going to the fallout shelters or hiding under the desks when the test siren went off. * Where did you live during the Cold War? New York, near two military bases which were considered targets by the Soviet Union in the event of an attack on the East Coast. Was it an emotionally strenuous time? Overall, not really. Although there were a few minor instances where talks between the 2 superpowers broke down and one side would buildup their arsenal, and then the other side would follow suit. My fear is that we could enter another era similar to the Cold War with all of these smaller countries obtaining nuclear devices,( North Korea, Iran, etc.) and with an unstable government in these countries, The whole situation could be played out again. I really don't want my children, or any children for that matter to have to grow up with the fear of annihilation from nuclear war. We just went through a whole generation that didn't really experience what it was like to live during a period of a Cold War, and here we are running that risk today.
