1986-1989
TH-700R4 or the TH-200R4

1990-1996

Aparently this isn't an indicator either. My caprice wagon has the HD package (12" drums, larger axles, huge radiator etc) and has a 200R4.

The 200R4 was the weaker of the 2 trans in stock form...but it can be made as strong as a built 700R4. The 200R4's are the transmissions that were used in the turbo Buicks..Grand National..etc.

Some info I found:
81-89 Caprice eng: all Trans: THM200R4
82-93 Caprice eng: 4.3, 5.0, 5.7 Trans: THM700R4

There is a transmission ID guide here: http://hotrodders.com/showthread.php?t=30771

Caprice/Impala with 350-cid V-8 was teamed with the 700R4 in 1983 and retained that until 1990 when it was upgraded to the 4L60 (the 700R4 was renamed 4L60) and retained that until 1994 when it was upgraded to the 4L60E (electronically controlled version of the 4L60).

Caprice/Impala with 262-cid V-6 came with 700R4 in 1986 and retained that until the end of the 262-cid after 1990.

Caprice with 305-cid V-8 came with 200R4 in 1989 and retained that until 1991 when it received the 4L60. Retained that until 1994 when it was upgraded to the 4L60E.

Hope straightens everything out.
