CONFIRMED NEW MODEL - the Porsche Cayman S
http://www2.us.porsche.com/cayman/pcna.asp
10:39 23Feb2005 RTRS-Porsche to launch Boxster-based Cayman sports car FRANKFURT, Feb 23 (Reuters) - German luxury carmaker Porsche <PSHG_p.DE> will launch the new Cayman S sports coupe this year to be positioned between its Boxster S roadster and its entry-level 911 Carrera, the company said on Wednesday. The hardtop two-seater will be based on the Boxster model line but endowed with more power, more room and a higher price. It will be outfitted with a mid-mounted 3.4 litre six-cylinder motor capable of 295 horsepower (HP). By comparison the Boxster S is powered by a 280 HP, 3.2 litre six-cylinder mid-mounted engine, while the 911 Carrera's six-cylinder rear-mounted 3.6 litre engine produces 325 HP. The company declined to specify the launch date of the Cayman S, which it made clear was not the eagerly awaited fourth model line that Porsche is due to decide on by mid-year. "Its name was inspired by a species of crocodile known for its quickness and tenacity," Porsche said on its website. "And like its namesake, the Cayman is both alluring and powerful." Spy photos published in motoring magazines showing what looked to be a Boxster coupe had elicited concerns among analysts that Porsche Chief Executive Wendelin Wiedeking would go back on his word not to build a car priced lower than the Boxster. It did not give a price for the Cayman, but said it will cost more than a Boxster and less than a 911. Generally, convertibles are priced higher than hard-tops due in part to the added mechanism needed. It could make the 911 obsolete, but I don't think the Cayman S looks all that great. Plus, "Cayman" is the one weird/dumb name for a sports car.
The Cayman S needs dry-sump lubrication as does the Boxster and 997. |

The Cayman S cannot replace the 911. The 911 is a Porsche in it's truest sense. They (Porsche) were carefull when concieving this car. Too much performance = 911 territory. Too cheap = Boxster territory. THis car was made with every consideration in mind.

Re: NEW Porsche model - the Cayman S
I tend to agree. Will reserve judgement until i see it in the flesh, but it doesnt look too bad overall. Like the front view.

The following is from autoweek.com:
"Contrary to hints of a lightweight racing version of the new Boxster-based mid-engined Cayman coupe (AW, May 30), Porsche research and development officials in Weissach insist there is no club sport or stripped-for-racing Cayman in the works. “The racing edge of Porsche is, and will remain, the 911,” said chief engineer Wolfgang Durheimer. “No production car will supplant it anytime soon. There is no plan for a Cayman intended for racing at any level.” The 2006 Cayman S is powered by a new 3.4-liter version of Porsche’s horizontally opposed six, generating 295 hp, or 15 more than the current Boxster S. The Cayman S will be the high-trim, top-output coupe variant. Another Cayman in development—a standard model with less equipment than that of the S—is likely to be powered by a 3.0-liter, 260-hp boxer six. That version may not go on sale for more than a year after the launch of the Cayman S. Cayman S debuts at the Frankfurt motor show this fall and goes on sale in the United States by spring 2006." It is too bad that Porsche won't race a superior design (mid-engine vs rear-engine). |

It will have more performance, better handling, and cost less than the 911.
The 928 was intended by some to replace the 911, but it wasn't a sports car and was very expensive. |
