There is no substituute...

The old saying that was born in the late 1940s- early 1950s "there is no substitute for cubic inches" is as accurate as saying gravity holds your ass on the planet. Yet I find smart ass mofos that think it's old due to DOHC or turbos or what not on smaller engines. Well, I say, do the same mods to a larger displacement engine and it will ALWAYS produce more power mod for mod. It's impossible that it will not.

And the one thing no small engine can produce, whatever you do to it is torque, the real power. In the old days boring and stroking was the cheapest way to produce more power since there wasn't tons of bolt-ons like today.

And the US needs to quit that fuckin liter shit! That's foreign! Its a 350CID not a 5.7 liter and a 7.44 liter is a 454!

Re: There is no substituute...

I believe the saying exactly goes:
"There is no replacement for displacement"

And actually putting a supercharger or a turbo on an engine will increase torque. But, small engines simply do not have enough metal swinging to make a lot. However I do agree with you, those little four bangers that think they have a sweet ride are stupid. The only ones I can even begin to respect are the ones who put enough into their car to actually make it fast, and I'm talking like 11 second 1/4 mile fast.

Re: There is no substituute...

Technology is the only substitute for cubic inches

I think the problem is that you are still living in early 50's junior

there are a lot of mods that small or turbocharged engines will benifit More from, than a big domestic..
a 3.5" or 4" exhaust on my turbo'd I6 supra is going to yeild better results than it would from any 350

Go and watch Nopi tunervision, or another sport compact show, notice the little civics, supras, etc. doin quarter miles in 6-8 second runs.. then come back here and tell me that no small engine can produce torque..

Re: There is no substituute...

Explain to me the physics proving that your supra will get better results from a 4" exhaust than a 350 would? Does your supra make more exhaust than a bigger engine? Also where do you stick a 4" exhaust pipe? Isn't that a little excessive?

Re: There is no substituute...

Technlogy killed the need for more cubes. You can get the same amount of power ut of engine half the size now. The addition of fuel injection made a huge improvement in the ability to create a more accurate a/f ratio and while you always add power with stroking power adder's such as turbo's and supercharger can do the same. I love how all these huge cubed 427,454++++++ and so on ran at best 13's but yet 346 LS1 have been known to run 12's stock while getting 25+ MPG. Yeah cubes are where its at .

I've watched it. Sure do seem to be a lot of bye runs because of parts breakage [ and I've done the SCCA thing with 4cyls so don't say I'm totally biased ]. 4cyls are great for autox and rr, V8's are king of the drags. Gotta have torque to haul the durable driveline parts that allow you to race week after week with little maintenance or breakage.

Put some skinny early 70's tires on your car and see how the times degrade. The stock big blocks were spinning the tires all the way through 2nd gear. We took a bud to his first dragstrip foray in his 455 W30 { 31 ?? } Cutlass. Total smoke 1/2 way down the strip. Still ran Mid 14's.

Re: There is no substituute...

Sweet jesus lets not get into one of these debates, part of the reason i left this forum for so long cause this is all there was, pointless bickering... Like it was said earlier, who cares what you gotta do to get it there, as long as it gets there. There's a car for everyone, some people love V8's and some people love 4/6's...get over it...
