Land Rover or Hummer

Ok, Say you were to go on the most ridiculous and hardcore off-road trip one could ever think of. If you were to choose the most standard off-road vehicle between Hummer and Land Rover, whether it be the H1 or the H2 (pffffft, who would take one of those lol), or a Land Rover Defender, Discovery, Freelander, Range Rover, or LR3, which would you choose? Oh, and they have to be standard and stock as can be, except maybe for snorkels and stuff but nothing else. And any version of the Humvee is not an option.

Me, I would choose basically any Land Rover, because they're all capable of doing some hardcore stuff off-road. plus post-1995, when the P38A body came out of the new Range Rover, Land Rover's were built by BMW, so their reliablity and quality is no question. But I would choose any of the models in Land Rover.

I'm pretty sure with this info, so correct me if I am wrong, I would really like to make sure my info is correct.

Oh yeah. The Defender 90 is the way to go. In green. Very British. I hate to throw in a choice that wasn't incuded, but I also like the original Landcruiser. Even the ones from the mid nineties were pretty cool looking.

Re: Land Rover or Hummer

I'll take a Hummer H1.
Please tell me you're kidding about Land Rover reliability. Land Rovers are among the least reliable vehicles on the road, and on top of that they are incredibly expensive to repair and maintain.

Re: Land Rover or Hummer

I'd take the land rover. It has a higher pimp factor plus very decent offroad capabilities.

Re: Land Rover or Hummer

Consumer reports rates them all and makes an average. Then they plot all of the vehicles by a percentage better or worse than average.

Just so you know, the Land Rovers rated exactly 177% worse than average in reliability. That's not a typo... 177%.

The H2 is a glorified suburban that has cheap wavy body panels, the power to weight ratio of a Corolla, and legendary GM reliability (which consumer reports rated a mere 74% worse than average) I don't know about anyone else, but the day I pay $60,000 for a vehicle, I at least want to be able to see my reflection in the paint, not have wavy, vibrating body panels.

The H1 is still not the greatest on reliability, but at least its not based on GM's design. It is an excellent off roader. Don't get me wrong, the Rover is also excellent off-road, but if you want a competent ON-road car, look in an entirely different direction.

Re: Land Rover or Hummer

I'd go with a Hummer, not an H2 unless it was given to me. Has anyone seen the H3 yet? I saw one at the Chicage Auto Show. VERY big disapointment. Practically a station wagon. Mechanically, it's pretty close to a Colorado.

I would have to take an H1. H2's are actually pretty good offroad but like curtis said, they are a cheaply made, glorified suburban. Plus you will get a lot more respect driving an H1, too many soccer moms drive H2's. Plus an H1 is much more rare.

A lot of that is due to the Freelander, which scores very poorly in reliability surveys (yet most owners still say they'd buy another one - badge snobs). I don't recall reading anything bad about the Defender's reliability record

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon of course. No other 'stock' vehicle can traverse off-road courses like it. Plus, I'd be saving about $20,000 over the other two.
