GTI/nitrous question

Okay, so as some of you know..I'm going to be racing a 2000 VW GTI VR6 tomorrow night that has a couple bolt ons. I should win this race no problem. He probably runs mid 15s. We were going to race from about a 15mph roll. Now the thing thats scaring me...is he's wayyyyyy too confident and he keeps trying to bet large amounts of money. And my 'friend' (casual acquaintance) keeps trying to talk me into it. Now, he knows the guy and I don't..and my friend doesn't know anything about cars..but I think they're communicated something that I don't know. So I'm thinking this guy has to have some hidden nitrous. I'm going to look under his hood before we race..so what're some signs I could look for that would indicate him having nitrous? I was very confident about this race until I started thinking about how he could be trying to set me up. So if anyone knows anything about GTIs/hiding nitrous let me know.

Re: GTI/nitrous question

Jettas run mid to low 15s stock, with Nitrous...hed be somewhere in the 14s, maybe high 13s if hes set up for high HP Sprays.

Re: GTI/nitrous question

The only reason I'm worried about it is he's too quick to want to race for big amounts of money. And it's kind of obvious that I'd win...so he must have something up his sleeve.

well, how big is big? in some of our cases, 20 bux can be a "big" amount of money

Re: GTI/nitrous question

Maybe he's chipped the ecu or has some program to go along with it. VR6's are mod happy from what I've heard. So maybe you can't see it in the engine bay, but who knows. I'd take him up on his offer. Make sure you get a vid of it too. I want to see what happens. L8...

Re: GTI/nitrous question

if you look at his engine look for a hose of some sort (most likely steel braided)hooked up to his intake somewhere where the nos would be sprayed if he has a dry kit. And I think wet kits have special injectors that spray fuel and nos at the same time (I'm not sure about this) so you could try to look around his fuel rail and injectors for anything out of the ordinary. Other than that you could play it smooth and seem interested about the car and ask to look around the inside and then look for a bottle in the trunk. Either that or just like Drifty said just set up the rules of the race and say "no nitrous".

VR6's barely gain anything from a chip. The 1.8T on the other hand makes huge gains with a chip.

My best friend has an '01 GTI VR6. You will probably win hands down unless 1) he has nitrous. 2) he has a super or turbocharger. My friend only has an intake, and I walk away from him every time in my stock celica..

Just race him and find out Ya win some, ya lose some. But that's why I don't race for money, cause you never know. Just race for fun, or for gas, and see what happens.

Re: GTI/nitrous question

I just found out that he also has a few weight saving mods..like he has his rear seats taken out. but he's not gutted. but, I'm still feeling pretty confident and I think I'll just put up $20.

Shoot for big bills, man!!! J/K Is this your first money race, or do you race for bills alot? Just curious, because I remember my first money race. It was for $50, and I can tell you, you will want to get rev happy out of the hole. It's a mental thing, so if you run for money, and you know you can take him, get a nice clean launch and hit your gears right. Good luck, and get that sucker on video.

Re: GTI/nitrous question

I've raced for money before, $20 really isn't much to me..and we're racing from a roll. Like a 15mph first gear roll.

Re: GTI/nitrous question

What GTI is this damp? is it silver with gunmetal rims w/ polished lip is it?

It is extremely easy to hide nitrous on VR6 motors due to the way the manifold is. EIP makes a kit that hides it very well and it being a VR6 he could spray nice amounts of nitrous stock.

Let me know what he looks like I have raced most vw's that run around ritchie and there are some that are pretty damn quick.

I haven't seen it yet, I just know it's silver. The guy who owns it works at metro in brooklyn park.
