R32 vs. M coupe

I was checking out prices on some used cars I'd like to have, and an interesting comaprison came to mind. Two of the baddest hatchbacks ever sold in the U.S.: VW R32 vs. BMW M coupe. (Forgive me if this comarison has been made, though.)

I'm not just talking numbers here. Which would you rather OWN? As in, which could you drive everyday and would be worth spending your own, hard earned money on? You can buy nice, super low mileage examples of both for roughly the same price. One has awd, the other is rear. One has 240 hp, the other 315 (or 240 if a pre 2002 model).

I'm still not sure. I lean toward the VW because of awd and a back seat. But the BMW is just so wild looking. And if you get a two tone interior, it looks even better. And there's also that sweet inline six. But then again, the VR6 is a jewel too. What the hell. I'm not married yet and I've got something else to drive in the snow. I say go with the Bimmer. Any comments?

Re: R32 vs. M coupe

Took me a while to warm to the looks of the Z3/M Coupe, but I eventually did and I actually find it to be quite a looker, but I still prefer the subtle yet effective Body Kit of the R32.

As an everyday car? Well both a Golf and a BMW are going to be as reliable as anyother car, they'll both cost more than a US/Japanese car to fix if you're in the USA, but that's a risk that you accept with buying a European car outside Europe, I suppose.

In the end if you're going to simply drive on dry roads, with no need for a back seat, then the Golf offers no real advantages over an M Coupe.

Re: R32 vs. M coupe

I love the looks of the M Coupe, and the engine (post '02) is a masterpiece. If you can get one of those, it's no contest.

I'm kind of pissed that you wrote that- mainly because you make a good point. You may have single handedly corrupted the perception of everyone who sees your post and then immediately bothers to look at the car again.

I always liked to think the car rezembeld a German nazi helmet (not that that's a good thing), or maybe a shoe. Images that were a little less, uh, gay.

Seriously, though. For those who actually like the coupe's looks, it appears that it is a no contest argument for the 2002 and up coupe. What about the 240hp coupe as opposed to the R32?

I would go with an M Coupe, with either engine. They are amazing cars. I'd even consider a S54 (315hp) powered one against my M3. I love the interior styling, and while I origionally disliked the exterior, it has grown on me alot. This is one of the rarest modern BMWs, and is an excellent example of pre-Chris Bangle design.

S54 M Coupe:
Pros- Interior styling, exterior styling, RWD, rarity, incredibly fun to drive
Cons- The S54 is one of the most expensive engines out there to modify, some dislike the styling.

S50 M Coupe:
Pros- Interior styling, exterior styling, RWD, rarity, incredibly fun to drive, easier to modify then S54
Cons- Not as much starting power as the S54 engine

VW R32:
Pros- AWD, rarity, understated styling not lost on car people, fun to kill Hondas, Acuras, etc. in a GOLF, probably the easier to modify then either of the BMWs.
Cons- Styling is lost on normal people, so-so VW reliability, inferior interior.

I like both of these cars. They are rare, and show some sophistication as opposed to the average person with that kind of money that buys a 350z or a Mustang GT. Interesting choices.

Re: R32 vs. M coupe

If I had a aerial/top view of the BMW M Coupe...you'd see what I was talking about...long in the front and "balled" up in the rear...I wish it wasnt so...and I know the car has power and can handle...but...when you look like male genitalia...

Despite the fact that you have flamed me previously. I just cannot disagree that has got the be the funniest, yet true, thought I have heard on a car so far, Kudos.

For those who don't see the similarity this should help. I hope this is not considered too perverted.

Now that is one good looking labido or you can say that it can be what this owner is compensating for.
