16 soon...Need help choosing a car

A year ago, I wanted a small, light, sports car for my 1st car. now, i have changed my mind...I dont like riding in the back of a coupe, so why would my freinds? and I dont want to get in n out or have my passenger get in n out when people leave/enter the rear seats
heres my requirememnts:
+Sedan
+fairly quick. not lookin to break any records here, just want to be able to keep up with that god damn Cavalier @ my school that thinks it is so frikkin fast. i think the owner hates me because I told him his stock cavalier is slow. oh well.
+doesnt stink like old eggs
+is easy to work on (AKA cheap parts. i can do thw work, but im poor...)
+fairly low mileage
Make/model doesnt matter much. I was looking at some of the old Dodge K- Cars, simply because theyir sleepers that can hold quite a bit of power. and sedans. if you guys have any other sedans that are relativley quick (compared to Civic/Cavaliers/rice boy cars)
by rice boy or ricer, i am referring to the way the car is modded like double deck wings n such.

my budget is around $5k. i may be able to push it to $6k. after all, my parents wouldnt be buying me a car if they let me drive the 1966 Impala SS Conv. they promised me sine I was 4. oh well. My mom doesnt think im responsible enough for it, and my dad likes his bed. the couch aint too comfy to sleep on im sure.

Re: 16 soon...Need help choosing a car

Easy one for me. 93-96 9C1 caprice. Buy a beat up cop car. It comes with the LT1 engine that is the sister to the vette and camaro engines. It has 260 hp in stock form, but the 330 ft-lbs of torque make it seem MUCH faster.

Pick up one in the sub-100k-mile territory and drive it like you stole it. There are TONS of aftermarket parts for this car thanks to the Impala SS.

You'll be pulling mid 13s at the track and that cavalier will be lucky to get 16s. You'll even be able to spank some of the best import tuners on the lot.

I agree, the caprices are powerful, large sedans, though a bit overweight, you wont be able to throw it around the curves like you would a smaller, lighter sedan, but in the quarter mile, you will rip that cavalier you want to beat a new asshole. Plus, like curtis73 said, there are a lot of cheap aftermarket parts to make that car even faster, and you can fit all kinds of friends in it, and it makes a great sleeper. Another good car that comes to mind is the Dodge Spirit R/T. It has 224 Horsepower but i think it was a 4 banger so the torque probably wasnt up there where it should be, but it also makes a great sleeper.

Re: 16 soon...Need help choosing a car

id reccommend a 1994 Toyota Camry

They are fairly quick, easy to work on, get great gas mileage, and are very reliable. My uncle has one and it has 210k miles and still running strong.

Re: 16 soon...Need help choosing a car

I've got a 1996 Toyota Camry V6 LE sedan, and it's awesome. Plenty of power, high 15's on a good day, comfortable and reliable. My only complaint about it is a lack of a manual transmission. Body roll is pretty excessive too, but that can be fixed with some aftermarket TRD suspension parts and bigger wheels.

If you're looking for something a little sportier, though, it's hard to go wrong with an old Chrysler or Dodge turbo sedan. And jncodave, that Spirit R/T, which makes 224 horsepower, also makes 217 ft-lb of torque, the bulk of it down at 2000 rpm. The Chrysler turbo fours are wonderful little engines that make plenty of power high and low, are reliable and easy to work on, and have plenty of aftermarket support.

Re: 16 soon...Need help choosing a car

my friend has a 97 pontiac grand prix gtp, [3.8L supercharged] that he picked up for 6k, with 90k miles on it, and in perfect working condition, the car is definetely fast for the money and plenty fast for a first car. i think its worth taking a look at. the insurance may be a little high on it since it is supercharged

what about a 93-01 Nissan Altima? with the 2.4L engine, pushing 167lbs of torque and 155HP. the car will definetely beat any civic or cavalier [in stock form of course]. the ka20de engine can handle basically anything you throw at it and responds well to simple mods. the insurance on this thing is great too. I pay only 100 dollars a month for it, and im 17. It also fits 5 people quite easily and has adequate trunk space. They are cheap as hell too, i picked up my 93 altima with 108K miles on it for $1500, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it, and im pretty sure itll go another 60K miles before it starts to give me any trouble.

The dodge avenger is a quick cheap car, with the 2.5L 170HP engine, but then again its a dodge, so you have to worry about its reliability and its insurance is going to be a little high being how it is looked at as a sports car.

I too am 16 and looking for a car much like the requirements of Importbuilder(original poster).
What company is a caprice from? I just started getting into cars a while ago so bear with me.
My friend is selling me his 90' pontiac formula firebird, which he redid last summer with about 7 grand. He's giving it to me for 3 grand. Is that a good deal?

Re: 16 soon...Need help choosing a car

the caprice is a chevrolet

yes that is a very good deal as long as the firebird is running well and the body is clean with no rust.

Re: 16 soon...Need help choosing a car

I would have suggested a Subaru Impreza WRX/STi, but...

Re: 16 soon...Need help choosing a car

You could buy the car i got when i was 14. (In ND we get driver's liscenses at 14 1/2 yrs.) I bought a 1992 Buick Skylark 4 dr Gran Sport. It has 90K and runs perfectly. I even put a short ram intake on it. I'll sell it for $2500. You could buy my Civic so i can get a WRX. I'll sell that for $8000-9000. Thats a little too much though.

Re: 16 soon...Need help choosing a car

Try looking around for a mid 1990's Ford Taurus S.H.O. They have four doors, alot of them have manual tranny's and they are fast as hell.

I would not say a SHO is fast as hell...They run like 15.2 right? I would go with the caprice, or buick roadmaster (Same car) I like the way the wagons look...I raced a modded buick roadmaster, and he won by like, 7-8 cars....He was deff modded...I was in my camry...I didn't think they had that much balls, but they really do
