sticky gas pedal

I am having a problem with the pedal sticking on initial acceleration. Once you get going, it is ok. Just the start up is the problem. Is there anything I can do to fix this or do I have to take it some where? Please HELP!!

It is a 2001 Astro Van, the gas pedal just sticks and you have to push it a little harder to get it to go. How do you fix this problem. It is a V6, 4.3L, I think?

Re: sticky gas pedal

This is a fairly simple fix and will cost about $3.

It is caused by carbon build up on the butterflies inside the air intake.

To fix it:

1 buy a can of Throttle Body and air intake cleaner.
2 remove the air duct from where it enters the air intake (looks like a carborator) on top of the motor.
3 spray the cleaner inside the air intake (just follow the directions on the can
4 reconnect the air duct
5 you're done

My blazer has a 4.3, and did the same thing. This fix has also worked for countless others in these forums.

Re: sticky gas pedal

All that area can affect how it feels at the pedal? It actually feels like the pedal needs to be greased or something. Well I can say I learned something new today. Thank you.

Re: sticky gas pedal

make sure you clean it well, the carbon sticks pretty good and you need to get it out of all the cracks

Re: sticky gas pedal

when the engine is shut off the butterfly in the air intake closes, the carbon is very sticky and will try to hold the butterfly in place when you press the pedal. After the you press the pedal the butterfly opens and will stay open as long as the engine is running. But when you shut it off, it closes again and sticks, the longer the engine is off the harder it is to press the pedal.

Re: sticky gas pedal

Are you familar enough with the engine to know what the air intake (looks like a carberator) is? or do you need more help?

Re: Re: sticky gas pedal

I have looked at the engine. But, no, I do not know what the air intake looks like. I just figured it probally comes off the air filter somehow?

Re: sticky gas pedal

follow the air tube from the air filter to the motor. The air tube connects to the top of the air intake (you will see the throttle cable on the side). If you need to, get some one to sit in the van and press the pedal you will see it moving. If you take the air tube off and look inside the air intake you will see the butterfly that moves when you press the pedal.

Re: sticky gas pedal

Here's an old post about this issue regarding the 4.3 from the Jimmy forum:

The "throttle body" everyone refers to is the air intake. It probably would have made my others posts easier to understand if I would have called it a throttle body.
