Oil pan modification
Here is what I did today.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The bottom is tilted because its going to be an external pump/wet sump design, and the fitting you see there is the pump inlet/pan outlet. I still have to weld the bottom on. |

Re: Oil pan modification
Great work there duplox,
as your project has progressed, your welding has vastly inproved. Well done, can't wait till it's finished.

Re: Oil pan modification
I'm sure I'm a bit better, but the reason the welding is so bad on the intake manifold is there are a lot of cramped spaces - well, cramped for the giant MIG gun. When I have good access to the joint, my welds are usually pretty nice.
I can't wait to get it all finished up! Still needs two turbo oil returns welded in and a scavenge fitting welded in, as well as some internal baffling. The two drains holes are already cut. Then its off to the powder coater! Should look nice when its all one color. |

Re: Oil pan modification
Sweet work, man! Those welds look strong and non-porous. Who cares what they look like... that's why grinders exist
Make it strong first, then worry about how it looks. You have gone light years ahead of me with sheet metal. Give me some 1/4" steel and I can smack the heat to it for some good welds, but give me sheet metal and I will blow holes through it more than I can weld it. When it comes to sheet steel, I use my welder for a cutter more often than anything

Re: Oil pan modification
Its official, you have the most fucked up looking 351 I'v ever seen
. Its starting to come together nice man, I just hope you dont have clearnace issues with it like that. Are you planning on running an oil cooler and external oil filter? I'm planning on use a Canton/Mecca external filter on my twin turbo 258 project, cant beat them from what I hear.

Re: Oil pan modification
You haven't seen anything yet! Wait til the distributor relocation is done and water lines plumbed into the heads... Its gonna be one funky looking motor!
The only clearance problems that may come up is the oil outlet might be awful close/hitting the motor mount brackets. However, I'm running a front motor plate instead of the standard motor mounts, so at worst I'll have to attack the motor mount supports with the torch and grinder. It should clear the crossmember, since its still the same basic design as the original pan. Just wider and square instead of rounded. It might hang a bit close to the ground, but I don't think I'll be going over any speedbumps very fast in this car. Its only an inch lower than the original pan. As for oil coolers/filters, I was planning on running an oil cooler with one of those dual external filter adapters. I still have to find a good pump. |

Re: Oil pan modification
Thanks for the replies!
Here is an update: Today I made the baffle, but have yet to install it. Its going to be bolt-on to make sure the powdercoaters can get a good coating on the inside of the box. I also welded the bottom on and fabricated one turbo oil return. Here are some pics: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Tomorrow I'll make the other return, weld on the scavenge fitting, and install the baffle. |
